I'm new to the NY metro area. My Husband and me finally settled upon an Apartment in Queens.
I have a job that I work at "odd hours" that ends at 11 PM in Brooklyn. My job is at Atlantic avenue in Brooklyn, close to the 2/3/4/5/B/Q/N/D/LIRR station. And I live close to Queens College(Flushing).
The hard part here is figuring out the commute. I have been going to my job for a couple of weeks now and it takes me a little over an hour to get home, an hour 15 minutes exactly. The subway ride is pleasant for the most part interms of passengers but I find it really stressful and also a waste of time.
I see that I have an LIRR terminal near me, which made me think about using the LIRR and upon checking the website I got to know that LIRR has a different fare system which is way higher than the subway. I'm willing to pay for that fare but I'm not able to find a route that will work.
If I take the LIRR from Atlantic terminal, I can be at jamaica terminal in 20 minutes. This means I would have to take the Q25/34 bus from the jamaica terminal to my home.
At 11 PM, is this area around the jamaica terminal safe? is the LIRR itself safe at this hour? I find the subway really safe even at 11 30 pm.how far is the bus stop from this terminal? Do we have cops near the bus stop? I tried looking on the map but could not figure out all this.
It seems that this could be a faster route, if I time myself based on the train's departure from atlantic, for me rather than taking the subway.
What are you thoughts and do you have other suggestions?
THANK YOU in advance for taking the time to read through my rather long mail.

An hour and 15 minutes is not a bad mass transit commute to, what used to be called, a two-fare (subway and bus) Queens zone.
I used to commute between Bay Terrace and the financial district, and it was 1 hour and 45 minutes each way.
Your proposed new method involves two problems:
1. catching an LIRR train on time...missing one at 11Pm means a long wait.
2. catching the bus...which pretty much runs without a schedule (in spite if wasting ink printing them up.) Standing on dark streetcorner for 15 minutes is not pleasant as midnight approaches.
The new method WILL cost more and honestly I don't see you shaving off any commute time with it.
Bts since the proof of the pudding is in the eating try it both ways with a stopwatch. Even if you save time with the LIRR perhaps saving 5 or 10 minutes won't justify a couple bucks more?

Why don't you try walking to the Fulton Street G train station, then transferring to the 7 at Court Square, then taking a bus home from Flushing?

Appreciate your response.
I'm also worried about missing a bus which means stranded on the streer for the next one.
I might want to try it once but even to try it once I'm scared because 11 PM or later at jamaica sounds very very scary to me.

I am looking up the G train now as I read your post. Makes sense. But the commute time on google map for the G shows as "20 minutes" . I think it takes me about the same to court square by the E or the 7. I'm not sure though. I might want to try this once. Again, the G route is new to me and I'm worried about the line's safety at that hour. but definitely more safe than being stranded at jamaica 11 pm.
