Trains & Buses are $2, cash is taken only on buses. Get a Metrocard, good for all trains/buses. You can get a card for each trip or 10 trips for $12 but best is $7 for 1 day unlimited rides or $28 for 1 week unlimited or $76 for 1 month unlimited. No transfers (given on buses not trains) to worry about and MUCH cheaper in the long run. Stores sell them but easiest is at almost every station in Manhattan, at booth or machine with cash or plastic. If you lose it too bad unless you use a card for a month unlimited, they reimburse days lost. The trains are kind of overwhelming in Manhattan, there are as many as there are buses anywhere else... so I don't use buses much. Always have a train (1 map for the city) & bus map (1 for each borough or just Manhattan if you're just gonna stay here). There are local (all stops) and express trains, this is the only city where every route is covered 24/7, 20 min max between trains at 3 or 4 am but in Manhattan, other trains use the same tracks and go the same place until they leave for Bronx, Brooklyn, or Queens so you never wait long, only a few minutes between 5 am & midnight in Manhattan. At night, local trains may stop but the express becomes local. Don't worry if you miss a stop, just go over or under the tracks and go back. In Manhattan almost all directions are uptown or downtown (NOT north or south), also east side, west side. Some stations, go down either side of the street doesn't matter, others are uptown or downtown only, look at signs before going down. It may help to get a train map online before you come, your hotel is within a few blocks of the 1, 2, 3, A, B, C, D, E, F, V, N, Q, R, and W trains!

from JFK, cab is about $45, SuperShuttle van (it's blue) about $20, right to hotel. Mass transit is cheaper but I would just get to your room then worry about the trains. Don't even think of renting a car.

You're are a couple of blocks northwest of Times Square. And you are a couple of blocks north of from Restaurant Row! You can't get better than that!

No problems with safety. Just watch out for pickpockets at 42nd and 8th. Otherwise, Have a great time.

The taxi fare is FIXED from JFK to Manhattan - at $45, I believe. But you also have to pay for tolls and a tip is expected.

I have found a new place and have booked it... It is .... 1 United Nations Plaza New York, NY 10017 (Millenniujm U.N. Plaza Hotel) Now the problem that I have to figure out is how to get to my dinner locations. One of them is a dinner cruise which leaves from 12th Ave & W 41st St New York, NY (World Yacht Marina, Pier 81) Since i have to dress up i was wondering would it be best to Bus it as there appears to be no Subway stations OR should I just go with a cab. If I go with a cab for some of this how much can I expect to spend on cab fare. I have never used a cab.

That hotel is nice!

YOu're right near Grand Central Station, so subway access is a snap (the hotel is between 1st and 2nd Avenues and access to the subway is between 3rd and Lexington Avenues. And bring walking shoes. People walk in New York. A LOT. Walking a mile is not uncommon.

You can get over to the West side with the 42nd Street crosstown bus. And there's a taxi rank right outside your hotel. Taxis charge by distance and time (it's on a meter). Splurge....this is your honeymoon!

some taxis take cards...some. it's not the rule. also, there are restaurants and bars here that don't take cards either. you're going to want to carry cash here.
