This should have been done long ago. There are parts of the city whose only train service is LIRR or Metro North. Charing them ridiculous high fares to travel in city limits is stupid. If they were charge subway fares or similar to use LIRR or Metro North, neighborhoods mostly left out of public transportation would become a lot more accessible. Parts of the Bronx would have much quicker commutes to Midtown.
The MTA is requesting an additional 70 million from the city to make this happen. Looks like de Blasio ends up funding a lot of MTA initiatives.
Makes sense, though the LIRR and MetroNorth have much higher costs mainly because of conductors. European commuter rail typically has the same fare system as the subway, where the trains either have turnstiles or fare inspectors that do occasional inspections and give a hefty fine if you don't have your ticket.
If this happens the housing market of Eastern Queens and northern Crown Heights will be blown wide open.
Even the North Bronx will be blown wide open if they do this.
Which means the city will do this. If the housing markets in these places are blown wide open, well the city gets to collect the real estate taxes. It's in their best interests to do so.
Wonderful idea. Many areas only have lirr and metro north with no subway and they are building that extension into the east bx. This would be a huge qol improvement for those areas.
