I am interested in getting an electric Moped but all i see is they're available online only. Manhattan Bicycles on 9th Avenue and 47th told me there might be such a dealer on 34th and 9th but they weren't sure. Tread Bike shop on Dyckman St had one but they sold it. The could not give me any leads
Although some have told me that use of an electric Moped can get you arrested, you just have to register it with the DMV and the DMV will tell you if the brand you want is certified by them or not. As long as you have a driver's license you're good to go. The DMV has a schedule of what is required according to the different specifications of the Moped (like top speed of the Moped)
I seek a dealer so i can test drive it instead of merely ordering one blind online. A charge gives you up to 20 miles and if you run out you can switch to pedal mode and they come with cool stuff like horn, lights, trunk, etc
Does anyone know of such dealers, preferably in Manhattan but at this point I will look farther
I believe that Vespa is supposed to release an electric scooter in 2012. The company has been working on one, and they are actually one of the more stable mopeds. I also believe there are after-market conversion kits for Vespa scooters, but if it were me, I would purchase said moped/scooter from the factory authorized outlet.
Honda has also been working on a fully electric moped for a few years, which would be a great addition to their lineup. And, of course, the aforementioned BMW is also in development, so the market will change greatly with respect to the electric scooter market, though the BMW's concept looks like it might handle a bit more like a motorcycle.
A Vespa is a comparatively easy style to ride, so if you cannot track down a release date on the Vespa electric, I would look to a scooter that has the same style seat and balance.

I am surprised mopeds haven't really taken off in NYC. Maybe due to the weather? Way more energy efficient then a car, easier to find parking, wiggle through traffic. I see them increasingly but not at the level of major cities of Italy or Spain for example. Wild traffic like NYC but better weather.
It seems like it would only be natural for Americans. Then again most New Yorkers have never owned a car to begin with.
