Manhattan for that price is ruled out. Here is a 1 bedroom in the Bronx for 900/month.

Between $900-$1000 a month one can rent a large studio in Rego Park, Queens (a decent neighborhood) which would be large enough for 2 people.

Are you sure this is still the going price, or was this the price a few years ago? I believe studios in Rego Park are now going for $1100 and up.

I don't know the prices for illegal basement apartments in houses-- maybe those are still $900-$1000.

I know for certain that it is possible to pay between $900-$1000 a month for a large studio apt. in Rego Park in a rent stabilized building. If someone is looking for a summer sublet for 2 months, then it definitely shouldn't be a problem to find that rent range (assuming that they can find a sublet!).

well thanks for all the input, i know it wont be easy but like i said i know people that have recently looked and say its possible at least to find a place like that in brooklyn. i never really expected to find one in manhattan but i thought it was at least worth asking because i would love to live on the island.
