I am 20 years old (white male) and looking for a summer apartment with a friend who is also 20 (white female) in between semesters. In total, we can only do around 800 to 850 a month.. i realize this is not much in terms of NYC real estate. Were hoping we can find a one bedroom. Preferably in manhattan.. ive been talking to a few people and have been told that in terms of my price range i could find a place uptown in areas like harlem and washington heights. Is this possible? And is it recommended to live in a neighborhood like harlem (i have heard it has cleaned up alot but i dont have too much experience with the neighborhood myself).. thoughts?
If not manhattan, anywhere in brooklyn?
Anyone that can help me with good advice , would be greatly appreciated!
800 total for one bedroom or even just a studio, so that me and my (potential)roomate would be paying 400 a each a month. i know thats a stretch but ive heard its possible!
Dude....its not going to happen.
Best bet..check Craigslist for a sublet. You might, and this is a big "might", be able to share a room. But that's about it.

A studio for that price is possible but it's going to be in the most dangerous, blighted and deprived areas outside Manhattan.
What's the big rush to move in this summer anyway?
When people say it's possible, they mean NYC, not Manhattan. You can get a place deep, deep away from Manhattan for that price. Most likely someone's basement apartment and it will be super small. The commute to Manhattan will range from 1 - 1.5 hours probably.
You can always go the illegal immigrant route and rent a small 1 bedroom apartment with 6 people. That's how poor people make it in NYC.
