I clicked through to this photographer's series on the seldom seen side of Brownsville and East NY (http://www.flickr.com/photos/arnade/sets/72157626946880859/ - broken link). He "read a New York Times article about the zip codes with the worst crime statistics [and] spent a few months last summer walking around and talking with residents of one of them". In looking through that series, I got caught up in going through all of his other work. He captures everything from pigeon keepers in NYC, to portraits of people in everyday life in NYC. He has an extensive series on people in different neighborhoods but the thing I found most powerful is his series documenting drug addicts in Hunts Point (http://www.flickr.com/photos/arnade/6561602655/in/set-72157627894114489 - broken link). It's the faces of addicts and the stores behind those faces. He says "I post peoples stories as they tell them to me. I am not a journalist, I don't try to verify, just listen."

Really amazing work.

Those photos are amazing, they really capture the culture of the neighborhood. I wouldn't mind living out there.
