I predict the Winter of 2011-2012 will go down as the warmest on record for Central Park. The one to beat is 2001-2002 but this last VERY warm week is putting us hot on the trail.

Through Feb 23 Central Park has averaged 40.4°F. 2001-2002 averaged 42.5°F.

Naughty! You're not supposed to be enjoying it.

I feel guilty for enjoying it, since to me it just is further evidence of looming disasters of global warming. Plus which my apartment is so cold, because they turn off the heat.

Bizarre post: #15.
I wrote only the question:
Quote:
nei,
What dates are those two averages for?
And then nei answered (and I presume he meant to say "First average is Dec 1-Feb 23") but the bizarre thing is the post is shown as MINE but EDITED by nei.

Nei, as a moderator, did you edit my post by mistake instead of coming in under your name. If not, then I'm flummoxed how the two posts got joined into one presumably by Kefir King.

Anyhoo, thanks for defining the dates.
(What website? I'd like to follow the numbers some more.)

There isn't a separate name that moderators get. I see an edit button when logged in next to the quote button for all posts, same as you see an edit button for posts you recently made. I pressed the edit button instead of the quote button by mistake since they're so close together. Done that a few times but caught myself before actually completely the edit. Sorry about that! I fixed to the original.

This is what I meant:

First average is Dec 1-Feb 23 for this winter (2011-2012)
Second average is Dec 1 2001 - Feb 28 2002

Winters is usually defined as Dec-Feb by meterologists.

National Weather Service Climate

The website I used came from the NWS. Click on Preliminary Monthly Climate Data to see each month for Central Park (taken at Belvedere Castle). To see the records click on the Local Data/Records tab and then Local Normals, Extremes which takes you here:

National Weather Service Forecast Office Climatological Data Page- New York, NY

It's interesting to look at the patterns of when the warmest and coldest months/years were. Seems like the last decade was not only especially warm but wet.

Okay,
I guess the difference is that a moderator sees an EDIT button on EVERY post while we mere mortals see an EDIT button only on our own posts. Now the Earth is back on its axis!

Thanks for the websites, both good.
