Hows everybody doin?

I'm planning a trip to NYC for the Summer and I would like to spend some time exploring the upper half of Manhattan.

I've been to NYC twice before but most of our time was spent visiting Tourist traps and at a family member's house in Queens.

Are these neighborhoods safe to walk through?
1. Morningside Heights
2. Washington Heights
3. Inwood
4. Hamilton Heights

Should I know some Spanish if I were to walk in a store?

Visit Fort Tryon Park. Beautiful park, great views. Cloisters (in the park) are worth checking out if you're feeling museums.

All should be safe, at least in the daytime.

Avoid Highbridge Park in Washington Heights.

If you are in the neighborhood, I suggest taking a swing through J Hood Wright park in Washington Heights. It's on Ft Wash around 175th or so. The playground there is a miniature of the George Washington Bridge and the view of the real bridge in the background is quite stunning.

My favorite museum in the world, and one of my favorite locations in the city.

1) Yes, they are quite safe to walk through. You are much more likely to be victimized in other areas of Manhattan.
2) Learning some Spanish can make things a bit easier but it's in no way required, there is always at least one person that speaks English that can help you. I've lived in Upper Manhattan for a very long time and know maybe 10 words in Spanish.
