Hi guys,

I know this has possibly been posted a million times about moving to New York so any feedback would be much appreciated!!
So im looking to 'Live the American dream' as they say, but don't really know where to start, i know i need a Visa and thats about as far as my knowledge goes.
Ild like to continue the same work here as i do in London (gas mains replacement).
So if anyone knows any contacts in the gas industry or whether my qualifications would be valid in the states and the best way to go about getting the right Visa ect, please let me know
Thanks!!

Not sure there's much of a gas industry here in NYC. Perhaps in upstate NY or NJ. But in any case, in order to work here you would to need to have your prospective employer to sponsor you for a working visa.
And given the current economic conditions, that's not an easy thing to get these days.

I'm afraid, yes.
They would need to sponsor you BEFORE you come to the U.S.

The other way you can legally work here, is by marrying a U.S. citizen and then petition a green card (legal permanent residency)

I suggest you also post your request on the legal immigration forum to get more information about visa sponsoring.

It isn't easy. With so many Americans looking for jobs, it's hard for a company to rationalize that they can't find a qualified American to hire versus sponsoring a foreigner.. Take the advice to post in the Immigration forum - you'll get more information there.
