What sections are considered The "South Bronx"? (New York: real estate, university)

The green block in Riverdale is a census tract but the map is not drawn perfectly to scale. That green block does have a high povety rate however it is only made up of a few homes/buildings, mostly undeveloped land. The size is exaggerated, it's more a slither along the Hudson.

As for Bronx arson, you better belive it went beyond Fordham Road. Less fires but they happened. If anything the organizations in the sections of the Bronx north of Fordham Road were able to save many shells and rehabilitate them for low income people. They were also able to slow the arson. It wasn't at the same level as the neighborhoods to the south. I used to have a picture of an abandoned building on Bedford Park Blvd on my PC. Wish I could find it. A good number around Bainbridge, Decatur, ect. Some still exist today.

Yes. Fordham Road is actually 190th street, so anything below 190 is the traditional South Bronx.

so let me get this straight...
we're using a geographical term (south) to define a neighborhood, when the physical location of the neighborhood does not apply? explain this.

my geographical definition of the south bronx is
north: cross bronx expwy
south: harlem river
east: westchester av
south: harlem river

fordham is not the south bronx. if thats the case why are we using "south bronx" to describe neighborhoods that are technically in the central bronx, or north central bronx?

i have people that live on creston and e 183rd they never referred to where they live as south bronx, and thats right below fordham rd. if u ask them where they live, they would say "fordham".

I think Fordham is from Fordham Road to Bedford Park Boulevard going North. So no, it would not be considered the South Bronx. If it ecompasses areas south of Fordham Road/190th street, then I suppose it would be proper to state that Fordham "straddles" the North and South Bronx.

South Bronx is not a neighborhood but rather a collection of neighborhoods. And the areas between the Cross Bronx (179th street I think) and Fordham Road are certainly the South Bronx in all its infamy.

I always thought that below 175th St was the South Bronx, anything North was the North Bronx.......so when did they draw new boundary lines?
If the South Bronx is Fordham, where does the North Bronx start....Woodlawn?

I am going by the 80s definition which stated that Fordham Road was the border between North and South.

At first I tought the same. That the South Bronx ended at around 170th st. But then it was explained to me that the South Bronx really isn't a geographical term. If that was the case Throgg's Neck would be considered when it's not. At first it was used to describe the area of Mott Haven, back in the day when it was the only minority area around. But as the 70's and 80's rolled around, urban decay hit other parts. The parts that were hit worse were the areas west of the Bronx river and south of Fordham road. Meanwhile the rest of the Bronx was relatively in better shape. So the term South Bronx was then used to seperate the "bad" or ghetto areas of The Bronx from the good ones. So it goes up to around 190th street. Nowadays that term doesn't really apply beacuse areas north of Fordham road are going downhill too. This is why some people even include Kingsbridge.

If you dont believe Fordham is in the South Bronx, going by the definiton, visit the area and tell me if is not the ghetto. Also visit the areas sourrounding it and tell me if is not the hood. I'd even say that the Fordham area is as bad as some areas south of 170th street.
