I love this thread. New York seems like such a dog town, I'm glad to see so many of us have cats! I got my current cat from a friend whose cat had kittens. I keep toying with the idea of getting him a friend. I work a lot and he's alone most of the time.

I did not know that North Shore did that but I think it's fantastic!!

My Tiger came from North Shore, but we inherited him from a friend who was moving. He is just the sweetest thing, and I love him to pieces. I really want another cat, but my landlord might freak. We weren't even supposed to have a pet, but she is an animal lover and didn't complain when we got him. Two might be pushing it tho!

I would say more people have cats than dogs in NY!

I adopted 2 of my cats....one from Brooklyn AC&C. And my 2 kittens I took in when they were just born after their mother abandoned them. I gave the mother a full 9 hours to retrieve her kittens, which she didn't...so I took them home and bottle raised them.

THAT was alot of work, btw. Anyways, i was planning on adopting them out but I ended up falling in love with the little buggers!!! How could I not after bottle-feeding them every 4 hours for weeks....taking them with me to work....mandatorily cuddling them because that's what it takes to socialize them....lol

My girlfriends friend has adopted several cats and they are all white. She was just about to adopt a "colored" kitten when she found a tiny ball of white huddled by a sewer pipe near her house. Needless to say she has a new cat now. Named Dwarf due to her tiny size.

Yeah, I think it may have some draw back for them being extremely fussy. I respect it because they want to place animals in good homes but 1 tiny iota that they don't like quickly disqualifies you. Honestly, it was easier adopting the cat than a puppy. They turned us down for a puppy because it would have been alone for about 5 hours. We adopted a kitten a few years ago but our cat was very aggressive towards him and would not accept him at all. I felt terrible leaving him closed in a room until we came home. When he was out my hat would hide or try to harm him. It really wasn't pleasant. So my husband returns the kitten, they were ok with it but what I didn't like was that they suggested that we bring in our cat for "therapy" with the animal therapist. Umm. No. I don't think so. That's where I kind of lost a little respect for them. You can't break a 12 year old cat out of her habits and accepting another pet. She has yet to accept the puppy we got back in December.

Good luck with that one.

I would much rather they very strictly screen prospective owners than hand them over to any Joe six pack. It's an animals life after-all.
