I think it's the same with ethnic whites. In most cities, Italians are simply lumped in with all other whites because those cities never had large, cohesive Italian-American communities. And if they did, they're long gone. That's not the case at all in the Northeast where you have New Jersey townships that are half Italian. There's far more ethnic awareness here.
I grew up in Boston in an Irish neighborhood.The nuns at school taught us that Italians,Greeks,Turks,Syrians,etc.... all the medeterranian types... were all part of the "black race".Irish/Italian or Greek weddings were frowned upon and considered "mixed marriages"
They also taught us that one day the "yellow race" would "rule the world" and they would puncture our eardrums with chop sticks for being catholic.
Amazing what total BS they teach in parochial schools

Italians and Poles not white? That's news to me! I guess that means I'm not white! No one has mistaken me for being anything other than white.
That is totally rediculous. Just because you are not a WASP doesn't mean you are a non-white!
My sons though are 6.25% non-white (my wife's great grandmother was a full-blooded American Indian) but they are blond haired,blued eyed and white as snow.
The difference between whites in Manhattan (and gentrified areas of Brooklyn and Queens) and white areas such as Staten Island has more to do with social class. The Manhattan/Brownstone whites are upper middle class and above (and often politically liberal), while whites in other areas of NYC tend to be working to middle class (centrist to conservative politically). I don't think that either group is whiter than the other.
Up until maybe the 70's they were not considered White by a lot of people. Politically the U.S is mostly a waspy country in influence, look at the majority of our prezzes. We've had one catholic prez and he had to specify several times that his religion would not cloud his judgement in order to get elected. It was mainly because of the kennedy's and continued assimilation that the perception of non wasp whites changed. Anyway I'd advise you not to be so sensitive about it, because its a very subjective flawed topic to begin with...

There is ONE race... the HUMAN RACE. Stop being racists. There is NOTHING special or unique about the piece of land that you were born on. Unless, people from different continents, with different skin color, etc had special powers then there would be a reason to differentiate among the different ethnic, race, skin color people BUT there isn't.

I've never considered Italians, Jews, Poles and Greeks to be "white" per se. But I'm from the Northeast. I doubt those distinctions are as sharp in other parts of the country.
