I've yet to visit New York, but I was curious - does it have the same uber-superficial vibe as LA when it comes to people judging you by how you look? From the media and everything else, New York (or at least Manhattan) has a reputation as being a place that is pretty superficial and where people care a lot about what you look like. Is it similar to LA in that regard, or is it different?

New York's a big place, bit of everything here. Generally no, but in some places you might still find that.

I think the people are so varied in looks in NYC that the answer is no.

Not as much as LA but it depends what your social circle is anyway...

No.
There is a very small percentage of superficial people but the overwhelming majority are not.

LA has a huge industry that depends on good looks and little else. NY not so much and brains go farther here.
So the answer to the topic question is NO.

It depends on the place you go and what crowd is there. As a traveler who is constantly traveling to all cities across the country you can find it out there but your question is too general because not 'everyone' is superficial. I've met some people are and aren't themselves. Again it's like what NooYowkur81 said, it depends on what social circle you surround yourself. I could go to a club or restaurant where you can be yourself or those places that are very superficial. After all LA has Hollywood so go figure as NY is more diversed.

I would also say no. My friend just moved back to LA for work and she is killing me with plastic surgery/filler stories. She's even from there and says it is insane compared to NYC. It's one of the reasons I left LA.

I can tell you about downtown. Many of the women do not wear makeup or have conspicuously large breasts. Not too many artificial looking women. However, people tend to be thin or in good shape. Uptown, on the east side you are more likely to see makeup and a more tailored look. Still, you will find thinness. My impression of LA is that they have blonder hair, more makeup, more jewelry and more colorful clothing. NYers tend to wear darker colors.

Nope. Since we have 4 distinct seasons we are more in tune with style and fashion.
