This is sooooo true. Chances are if you mind your business and keep it moving you won't get caught up in the madness. Yeah you can't help but get robbed or be an innocent bystander. but if you keep on the main streets, keep your eyes open and aren't flashing money/jewelry/electronics/latest clothing you rarely have anything to worry about.
Considering how close mentioned streets are to the 44th pct, I've always wondered how the drug "business" thrives ....... Those streets are known by people even outside the bx. I think the safety net around highbridge comes from it being a somewhat insular/people-know-the-locals area. You just mind your business and keep it moving.....Also bxchick, don't forget the new school on E-clarke
Highbridge can be depressing though.......
that doesnt make a difference.....for years, there was a crack spot right across the street from the precinct around my way.

Hi everyone, I'm the original poster. I finished the school year with no problems in the area. Twice I had to walk back to the station at 7pm and nothing happened. Jerome ave was still crowded at that time. No one ever bothered me or anything. My mentor has been teaching in the area for a few years, and apparently a lot of the locals on the streets seem to know her. The people in the area can tell we're teachers I'm sure, so they were always nice and respectful. The parents were very grateful for my help, and I got tons of gifts/flowers from them at the end of the year. Of course there are always some who don't care how much we help their children, but for the most part, I was really surprised how many parents helped me out. I learned a lot from working in that area for just a year. I grew up in an upper-middle class neighborhood on Long Island and never really went to the Bronx except for Yankee games. I got to see how people lived with a much lower income than everyone I grew up knowing. Most people are all the same no matter how much money they make. Wealthy parents may not know how to raise children, and same goes for poorer parents. It all ends up being the same really. I met some great parents working there, and I really do respect the people who live in that area.
