Good info for sure. Seems like the area from south of 14th in Manhattan into northwestern Brooklyn is where to land. I'm shocked to see such a large swath of the LES marked as "orange" on the safety maps. Maybe it's like my current hood in North Beach San Francisco as far as being orange only for whimps
Large parts of west Brooklyn and lower Manhattan are near low income tenements and housing projects. Many transplants are easy targets and locals can easily read who is not from here or not just by body language, accent and also pop Icon symbols such as starbucks and apple products. I know one transplant chick and she only uses windows products which later used to lower her chances of getting mugged, robed or burglarized. It was true. Her apartment that she shared with roommates was burglarized all apple products included an ipad and three macbooks stolen, for her an xbox360 and her gateway netbook was not stolen. Idevices have a similar value as jewelry at pawn shops.

I currently live in the LES and have previously lived in the neighborhoods in Brooklyn that have been recommended. I've never felt unsafe in any of them at any time of night. Crime maps are misleading since they account for lots of quality of life crimes, domestic disputes, bar fights, etc. If you look at maps for violent crime you'll get a better sense of where the rough areas are. Don't let a little orange on the crime map deter you.
LES is seedy but pretty safe IMO (except maybe for the areas right next to the projects) .
I've been there at all hours of the night and day and never felt unsafe.

Well, that was my original point. A "suburbanite" (or anybody with a fancy upbringing) would probably feel uncomfortable in the LES, but if you have experience with city living, you should be fine.
Like I said, the standards I used need to be refined a bit. Maybe some kind of "safety rating" would be better (0 is no crime, and 100 is very dangerous), and we just group it like that. Just food for thought.

I do like the subjective "feel for the area" approach though. The Trulia website linked in the other thread is woefully inaccurate based on feel and true crime threats. Going off of reported crime is misleading as most of the worst 'hoods end up with a lot more unreported crimes than busier, nicer areas.

Oh no, the orange on the NYC map is there for a very good reason.
