I would assume it pays better in New York than it does in Boston and I know the drivers in Boston make amazing money.
The problem with it is that it's extremely bureaucratic and requires months and months of interviews, waiting periods, medical exams, license exams, fees, union politics, and all kinds of other paperwork and time wasting crap before you can even get on a waiting list to start it up. I guess that's why it's mostly immigrants who hold those jobs because they have a relative who works for the company and squeezes them in. If you try to get into it from the outside, it's pretty difficult if not impossible from what I understand.
