Anyone know how well cab driving pays? (New York, Boston: taxi cab, license)

I've used google but haven't found anything too relevant/recent. I've been working in film/tv production but I desperately need a side job as I haven't been getting enough work. Plus I figured cab driving would be great for character ideas.

I would assume it pays better in New York than it does in Boston and I know the drivers in Boston make amazing money.

The problem with it is that it's extremely bureaucratic and requires months and months of interviews, waiting periods, medical exams, license exams, fees, union politics, and all kinds of other paperwork and time wasting crap before you can even get on a waiting list to start it up. I guess that's why it's mostly immigrants who hold those jobs because they have a relative who works for the company and squeezes them in. If you try to get into it from the outside, it's pretty difficult if not impossible from what I understand.

I have a friend who works for a car service and he makes great money. But he works 9pm to 7am, and has to deal with all the drunks and nasty people late at night, as well as all the damage, threats and body fluids that they leave behind. I couldn't do it.
