I love the story about Newark mayor Cory Booker running into the burning building to save someone, but wonder if we've ever had a NYC mayor who would do the same.

Not Bloomberg, certainly; he seems too phlegmatic. In fact, most NYC mayors don't seem primed for swift physical action. Koch? Beame? Ha. The only contemporary one I can maybe imagine is Giuliani, although (despite 9/11), I don't think he's ever rushed into anything heroic. Lindsay? Despite his elite background, he seems like a younger, energetic guy.

Without a doubt, Fiorello LaGuardia would have done likewise.

Giuliani never would have done anything of the sort. Although he wasn't mayor, the closest I can think of was Teddy Roosevelt. Dude was the epitome of a man's man, and I have no doubt in my mind that he would have done the same.

I thought of him, but wasn't sure he'd be capable of carrying someone, although I think he might have run in. TR, yes, would have charged in, absolutely!

That's T.R.? Holy crap he's scary!

Teddy tried to run for reelection a few years after leaving office and was SHOT in the chest while giving a campaign speech. He finished the speech before seeking treatment. 'Nuff said.

I'm sure there might be a couple that would set their neighbor's house on fire so they could run into it...
