Quaint Towns 1.5 hours from NYC?
My husband and I would like to move to a town where we can commute into NYC for work. We we would love at least 10 acres of land and a quaint village (no major strip malls, please) and if possible, access to a train into NYC. Any ideas are greatly appreciated!

There are a lot of options in Northern Westchester. Katonah is the quaintest village imaginable--picture perfect main street and lovely shops. Metro North stops there and trains are (I think) 55 minutes to Grand Central. 10 acres will cost at least 3 million, but you didn't mention price. Croton is very nice and parts of it are very quaint. It's a better commute--45 minutes and a lot more trains than Katonah since it is a "hub." While the town of Yorktown Heights isn't quaint, there are stunning areas with beautiful houses and lots of woods and horse farms--and you're 10 minutes from quaint towns like Katonah, Bedford, and Chappaqua as well as the art scene in Peekskill. The Huntersville area of Yorktown is really gorgeous and there are plenty of properties with 10 acres or more. The commute is good--it's 10 minutes to the Croton station. Other ideas in Westchester are Bedford and North Salem--but for 10 acres you'd have to spend over 5 million I think. Further afield, in Putnam, Cold Spring is beyond quaint. The commute is 1 hour 30 minutes on the train. I keep mentioning this RE blog on Northern Westchester, you should check it out--there's actually a house featured now in Katonah with 8 acres for only 1.5: Northern Westchester Home

Katonah? 10 Acres? That'll cost you - in the area of three million dollars or so. You'd be better off going farther north (you did say 1.5 hours) or west (to New Jersey). But it's going to be pricey.

You might also take a look at Milford, PA. The drive is 1.5 hours in to NYC (without traffic), and a direct bus (Coach USA) to Manhattan is available. The real estate and taxes are MUCH cheaper than NY, NJ, and CT, and the town overdoses on quaint.

New Paltz/Tarrytown
Try one of the two. New Paltz is a little far, but it's gorgeous and affordable.
