Woodlawn question
Is it true that there are more Albanians living in Woodlawn today then there are Irish. I heard that from a friend of mine who lives in Larchmont?

Ha, yeah right. Completely false. There are a handful of Albanians around, but at most they might make up 5-10% of the population, if that. All of the Albos live down in Morris Park or Belmont.
Woodlawn is still heavily Irish. Many Irish people were leaving the neighborhood a couple of years ago, but that has almost completely come to a stop. Lots of young people seem to have been coming over recently, so its only going to get more Irish in the near future.

My wife's parents live on McClain Ave. There are plenty of Irish in the stores, streets, churches and the little pubs.
My wife's father loves calling it "County Woodlawn."

Occasionally some people refer to the area by the #4(technically Norwood) train terminal as Woodlawn. My grandmother considered this Woodlawn but she didn't know about Woodlawn heights. Perhaps they are referring to this area as Woodlawn

I don't think Woodlawn is 90% Irish today. Does anyone know what the percentage is today anyway?

Woodlawn still has a very large Irish population (not sure if it still is 90 percent but close to that) but in recent years there has been some Irish that have went back to Ireland. After Sept 11th with tighter immigration some of the people have left. Area is still good but like every area it does change over time. Many years ago Inwood section of Manhattan was very Irish area and now look at that area. Also Bainbridge area in Bronx used to be very Irish but that changed also.

they went back because the Irish Economy is so strong.
you make much more money as a tradesman in Dublin compared to NYC.
Plus most are illegal. Whats the point in staying if you cant make any long term plans. With out a green card your stay will only be temporary.
That's why I returned . . Its hard to be away from home for so long also.
Christmas was always the worst day in NY...
Great town but like all great parties, at the end ya have a sore head and need to go home to your own bed.
