Hello,

I have very curly hair and am looking for a good hairstylist. Do you know of one? Your help is much appreciated.

Go Devachan in SoHo. They specialize in caring for curly hair!

Thank you for the tip. Can you recommend a stylist there?

I don't know if it's still true, but Ouidad used to be known for curly hair.

Ouidad and/or Devachan. I've only been to Devachan and see a stylist named Melanie. The last time I went there she got a little too scissor happy and I'm a little bit if I should see her again...

I'm a natural curly, too (I'm a 3b and have been natural since 2009). You need to head over to NaturallyCurly.com and click on "Curltalk" and you can peruse the SALON/STYLISTS section of the forum. People talk about the good and the bad.

Deva Chan and Ouidad are the most famous in NY, but that doesn't guarantee a good cut. Lots of curlies on the fora have complained about BAD haircuts from these places, so it's good to check and see who they say "yes, good" and who they say "No, bad".

I cut my hair with a regular wet-cut stylist (ie, not a dry cut a la DevaChan or a carve and slice a la Ouidad). If the stylist knows curly hair, they can give you an affordable cut that can be styled properly using the proper techniques. As you must know, with curly hair, it's about using the right styling techniques with the hair-appropriate products for your type (are you coarse, fine, medium; dry or oily; elastic or inelastic; protein-loving or protein-hating, etc.)

DevaChan can cost you upwards of $200 for a cut session. I don't know Ouidad's prices...but that's easily researched at Curltalk.

So, yeah, hit up Curltalk, and post for a recommendation if you want and get feedback. It's a good place to get some recs, though.

Happy Curls to you!!!!

Actually, just saw a post on NC.com's Curltalk where the Deva cut was $250, so maybe the price went up since I last chatted up someone who had one. I wanted to update that. Of course, that includes consultation, and they show you how to use the CG method with their products, so it's educational, too.

Then again, maybe her hair was really long and dense, so it cost more? Well, dunno. Still, it's an investment. My cuts last year were $30, every 3 months, but a 50 minute drive. Now, it's $50, but I can walk to the salon.

I'd expect to look like a (younger) curl goddess for $250 and have my hair dazzling for months.

ForeverXpeace,

Thank you so much for this recommendation. I work on the Lower East Side so going out to Williamsburg is a cinch. I am really excited about trying this salon out.
