First-time poster here!

My boyfriend and I are going to NYC for a scant 2 1/2 days during Memorial Day. We're from Chicago and definitely want to go out for dinner/drinks/walking on Saturday and Sunday nights... BUT neither of us is a fan of super crowded or super trendy places where you have to stand in line/pay $20 cover to get in.

So, what are some really fun but laid-back bars in Manhattan where we can have some drinks and meet locals, maybe even hear some live music? We're definitely not looking for anything too upscale or glitzy, but not looking exclusively for dive bars either.

Call me silly, but if anyone watches How I Met Your Mother, I would love to find something like McClaren's Pub .

It's difficult to find places like that on yelp or other sites like that so I'm relying on the first-hand experiences of some like-minded New Yorkers .

Thanks everyone!

here are just a few of my fav's in the LES/E village.
Try Big Bar on 7th to get the night started or night cap it at the end. Amazing TINY little place, Tell Roxie and Ray that Aaron & April sent you!! haha.
When you leave there walk over to 1st, then up to 7th, take a R and walk to Ave.A, on the corner there is a great place for drinks and really great bar food called 7A, after that walk down A towards Houston, cross and proceed down Ludlow St. Just on the left side is a great place called Max Fish, a little crowded on the weekends during peak hour so try to go early or late.
When your done there walk back to Houston, take a R and walk to the Parkside lounge, at Attorney/Houston..you'll see it there on the SW corner. That should eat up one of your nights, no ultra cool hipsters (well aside from Fish at least) great prices, great staff and no cover for any of those i mentioned.
Then head to the W side the next night!

I can suggest either the east village, west village, meat packing district for Manhattan nightlife. Also around memorial day rooftop lounges will begin to open up which will offer a nice views of the city while you and your significant other chill or socialize with other revilers.
