This has to eliminate the problem with cab drivers who give you hell about going somewhere in the outer boroughs.

As a former yellow cab driver,my guess is that the new green cabbies will behave in exactly the same way as the yellow cabbies always have. They will avoid known high crime neighborhoods, they will avoid people who look like they might want to go to a high crime neighborhood and they will avoid customers who look like they might want to go to Manhattan because they will have to come back empty.

Are you sure about this ? Yellow cabs no longer able to pick up outside of Manhattan ? If so it is going to make some things even worse because yellow cabbies won't even want to go to places just over the bridges.

What are they going to do,start giving tickets to yellow cabbies for picking up in Brooklyn,Queens,The BX,SI and above 96th St? I find it hard to believe that this is true but if so,it's stupid.

I guess it might create a new revenue stream for the city though.

Yeah this does not seem helpful if you are going BETWEEN sub-96th Street Manhattan and any other borough if they have these types of restrictions on WHERE each color cab can make a pick up.

According to the articles, the green cabs can pick up only north of 96th and in the 4 other boroughs, but not south of 96th. It does not explicitly state whether yellow cabs cannot pickup north of 96th or in the other 4 boroughs, however the assumption yellow =south of 96th, green = everywhere else.

But yes since it is the case that green cabs cannot pick up a street hail south of 96th, in theory they would have zero interest in taking someone to anywhere south of 96th, as they would have to turn around and go back without a fare...which is the problem in reverse with yellow cabs.

I think it's wrong to make that assumption and doubt anything like that will ever happen. In addition to the chaos it would cause there would be an uproar like you have never seen by the yellow cab medallion owners and lawsuits all over the place.Yellow cab medallions cost almost a million bucks and they come with the right to operate freely in all 5 boroughs.Any infringement on the right to pick up passengers anywhere in the city would result in an immediate devaluation of the medallion and all hell would break loose.

When I was driving a cab back in the dark ages the medallions were about $25,000 ! Seemed like a lot of money then but maybe I should have bought a few.Great investment.Might have been a better investment than my college degrees. The medallions to operate the new green taxis will probably be a really good investment too but I'm too old now

Loved driving a cab, especially at night ! I went EVERYWHERE and I saw EVERYTHING !

Yellow cabs can pick up anywhere in the city. THEY choose NOT to for safety, economical, territorial reasons.

safety = Columbia U to Battery Park is the Sex and the City Manhattan. This area is safe and have the money makers, the tourists, and the majority of the NYC workforce. Outer Manhattan (Harlem, Wash Heights, Inwood) is not consider to be the safest and not a lot of people take taxis in these areas in comparison to sex and city manhattan.

economical = all the tourists, workforce and money makers live in the sex and the city Manhattan. A taxi driver can make a lot of $$ in this area ALONE. Also, all the major hotels are in this area.

Territorial = livery/gipsy cabs own the pick up service in the 4 boroughs and outer manhattan. It's a respect thing. Although, some livery cabs do try to pick up people in the sex and city areas and some yellow cabs pick up in the hood too.

Problem: I live in Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx, S.I. and I need a cab to Manhattan south of 96th (Or reverse).

Solution: None yet.

I always felt expanding the regular yellow cab company would be the best idea. It seemed to be happening on it's own over the years. Again, I see many more in the outer boroughs nowadays.
