Last year around this time I had inquired about the old days in the Times Sq area about the former site of the MSG on 8th Ave between 49th and 50th streets. I had said that the site was described as "where the old Madison Sq Garden squatted and where winos hookers and pushers roamed" before Worldwide plaza was built.

A bunch of posters had said prostitution could be seen in large groups on the avenue from the Port Authority to the old parking lot between 49th and 50th, and that cars would often cruise the avenue from 42 street to 50th, down Broadway, across 42 street and back up 8th

I often dine at the Olympic Restaurant on 8th Ave between 48th and 49th, and i suppose that maybe this blockfront had this kind of activity going on back in the day

What I want to know is, was the section between 46th and 50th on 8th as crime ridden and intimidating as the part closer to the Port Authority, or was it tamer? Was it as bad as far as the amount of junkies, winos, hustlers, muggers, loiterers that you would see on 42nd and 8th or was it more mellow? Or was it the same types on the streets, just less of them, or not as bad?

I'm trying to get a sense of that section for someone who worked there on a daily basis.

thanks for the reply. however i've read all those articles. i am looking for someone who remembers that section decades ago (we might all be too young tho). one of the articles said the MS ran all the way up to 57th street. but back in the 70's i never saw any vice that far up
