Cutting city funding isn't changing anything. When there was lots of money flowing, schools were bad, when they cut funding, schools are bad. There is never a sufficient amount of money..it is a bottomless pit. Funding more or less has no bearing on results so please stop saying it does.
True we all have free will sadly people in the hood don't and need some sort enlightenment. Lets not forget the wealthy are too jaded.

You know single mothers of this city is in a huge abundance and majority can not afford after school activities for their kids even if they recieve child support aide from an ex lover and living in rent stablized housing. Dont worry call grandma who is living in Florida to fly over to watch your kids after school while the single mother slaves at a 9-7 job at some office or at best buy. Bloomberg is a sick guy. At this very moment in time the decline of Americas education system is a bigger threat to America and this city than the next pending terrorist attack or natural disaster. Children demand extra education mentally and physically activities and thats what after school programs provide.

In other news no guns for Cops and no hoses for Fire Fighters, however the city turns the Hudson River into a riviera from Inwood to Battery Park.

Well, whether the dumb mayor cuts school activities or not, I dont get why then "males will join gangs", and "girls will get pregnant", because the school doesn't have activities for them.

that is a bunch of crap. we didnt have activities after school, I didnt joing a gang, noe of the kids in my hood joined a gang...
who are these gangs" where do they come from, what do they do...gangs, this isnt The Warriors, give me a break......

and as for girls, Ok, no school activities, ok, i will have a baby then....

are you kidding me...

if young males and girls do what you say because they have no after school activities, then they were not brought up the right, decent, moral way.

this shouldn't surprise you that there are unfit parents in this world... There's plenty of kids out there that had it not been for afterschool activities, would have spent their time doing other stupidities... This is what kids do... That's why they need guidance and good parenting along with good teaching...

To say that the cuts to the funding of these after school programs won't have any of the negative effects some people are claiming is naive... How do you think all those neighborhood italian/irish gangs formed in the 50s when NYC probably was in its peak along with the whole country... Boredom... When kids have nothing to do, they find ways to entertain themselves...

Cause and effect, for every action there is a reaction.

No, you were just fortunate enough to have good kids... And thank your blessings everyday that they never got involved in those things... Really you're statement screams naive... No one is saying every single one of the thousands of students is gonna get knocked up or join a gang... (We already have sobroguy to twist comments, we don't need another one on here)... But what helped kids to find an outlet in the 90s and early 2000s that had a great effect on reducing gang recruitment was afterschool activities... You take those away, there's bound to be some sort of repercussions... And yes, bad parenting does exist in this world... I know it's shocking...

Your funny guy my friend. But I applaud you for being in your children's life and for being an intervening medium on steering them away from trouble and other deviant behavior, they will thank you at your funeral. In truth society on the streets of NYC need more men like you. I hope you made enough money to afford childcare or your wife stayed home all day which would be a blessing in todays world.

Many homes in NYC do not have a male figure head or male role model to intervene in a youths life. Most New Yorkers cant afford after school child care services unless if the kid has nearby relative like a Grandma or Uncle/Aunt. Most homes in NYC are runned by single mothers who work long hours at the accounting department or are on welfare stay home moms or on welfare and making money off the books by working as a beautician or escort. When these ladies work long hours and their kids get out of school at 2:30 pm where do the kids go? To the basketball and handball courts infested with one or two drug dealers, home alone, accidently start a fire by over heating microwaveable food, or walk the streets and lured by adult thugs to be a gun runner on the streets of gentrified Brooklyn, carting drugs between one building to another in Washington Heights, or little Jezebel from the South Bronx hanging out at Mannys house because she has no where to go, also Mannys parents are not home. With out after school programs scenarios such as this are a likely possibility or probably happened to thousands of youths through this city.

During my youth growing up and attending inner city schools of the Bronx, I attended after school solely for academic and athletic purposes, either voluntarily or mandatorily I had to attend an after school program. If I have not attended any after school programs especially during high school years I would have been a young father and I would have also feel into the wrong crowd causing me to have one or two blemishes on my criminal record. Thankfully this is not happened to me. After school programs help steer youth away from trouble which can be problematic for youths when they reach adulthood from not getting a job, cant go to college or the military to having bad credit. Then you question why are these neighborhoods are horrible, then you guys call for some Transplants to air drop out from the Midwest to improve NYC hoods.

In my family, I was asking Papa, standing in front of our home library, "Dead, what should I read today?". Paid off beautifully

In the coming century there will be very little need for educated people, as barkomatic implied. Cutting schools now is just the first step in a long inevitable process.

Why teach trigonometry to someone who is going to wash dishes or clean toilets?
