Tonight around 1:30AM I was awoken by a helicopter - it sounded like those huge garbage trucks that come around during that time to service all the restaurants on Northern Blvd. It was pretty much stationary in the sky for half an hour.
Anyway, what's going on with these things? It seems like every week, or every other week there is a helicopter flying the skies, sometimes shining their spotlight down on the streets.
It's so annoying - Sunday at 1AM - really? Now I can't go back to sleep...
you can call the police dept and ask...It may be that they are looking for someone or terrorist practice..I lived in Sunnyside a few yrs ago and I called the 108 and they would tell me what was the reason...
It was NYPD Aviation unit, they were searching for an EDP. It started out as a foot pursuit on 18th Ave/Corporal Kennedy St. Aviation unit was raised(they are based in south Brooklyn). Using infrared they were able to give the officers on the ground exactly where the EDP was. He was standing next to a tree near the Clearview Expressway service road. The officers on the ground were about 100 yards away from him. They got him eventually. Praise was given to the Aviation unit. I had my scanner on at the time so this is how I know.
I live in Woodside and by the time I saw the helicopter fly overhead, he said over the radio that he was 2 minutes out from where he was requested to be at.(Bayside)
What is even worse is when there are several news helicopters covering a major news story. You just have to deal with it. I know it sounds very loud in the wee morning hours and it's always impossible to go back to sleep afterwards but it is what it is.
thanks... I notice Americans abbreviate everything now...its hard to know what is what with a few letters... Mary had add and went to nyhp to get a syd and was told it was pms...lol
You must not be from the NYC area if you don't know what EDP means in relation to the NYPD,
I didn't know either (not from NYC) but thanks for info. Cool that you can get all this stuff on your scanner. I heard the helicopters last night too and wondered.

It's because we're in too much of a hurry to write anything out. Abbreviations are much easier to read when running down the street at full speed.
Actually though we probably abbreviate more than normal...starting with the fact that our name is often written as "USA" or more commonly "US". Most TV channels are acronyms and some people even use abbreviations as names (Jeb, W, Lad, JFK, LBJ, etc).
