I am thinking of transfering to Fordham University this coming Spring'08. I will be staying off campus. Could I get some feedback of the safety of this neighborhood.

Most students live in Belmont aka Little Italy. It has become a lot less Italian, but I have no idea if there has been a simultaneous rise in crime. Its probably fine.
When I was there (1980s) some students did venture to Bedford Park to live, which is more attractive than Belmont. There is much debate here as to whether Bedford Park is safe or not and I will leave that opinion to others. I would avoid anything West of Webster Avenue. Get student housing and live on one of the most lovely campuses in the world. |

Yes, I would definitely look into on-campus housing. Gorgeous, historic campus. Looks very safe too.

I agree with the other posters. Fordham really has an amazing campus. You hardly even feel like you're in the Bronx when you're walking around campus. Is there some reason why you want to get off campus housing?

live on campus. most anything else around there, and you're putting your life at risk. you've been warned...assume the risk at your peril.

The dorms are a better deal. You get to live with the student population and not have to deal with the population on the outside.
The Belmont area to the South is Puerto Rican with a growing Mexican population. There are a few Albanians around the northern section of Arthur Ave but they are insignificant. The Italians have all but left the neighborhood years ago. Still business though. Area is just an extension of East Tremont today. Fordham Bedford to the west is a dump. Bedford Park, north of Bedford Park Blvd is declining. Good and decent pockets scattered around, most of the good is near the northwest end of Mosholo Pkwy. As for safety: -There are a lot of beggers on Fordham Road near the Metro North station, the subway exits, and scattered across the strip. Ignore them. Some do get pushy so expect some *******s. -The side blocks off Fordham Road can be nasty. It's real desolite south of Third, Park, and Webster Aves. Once you go west of Webster it gets pretty wild. A lot of street people on the corners, in front of the buildings. -Also avoid Roosevelt HS between Washington and Bathgate on Fordham Road. A lot of fights that escalate quick. |

Check out my website, that should give you a little idea of the area. I rent apartments to many students. Actually about 60 students give or take, and none of them ever had a problem.
Let me know if you have any other questions or if I can be of assistance to you. Lisa |

If you don't choose to live on campus, have you considered living in Morris park, which is a really nice working-class Italian/Irish/Asian/Puerto Rican neighborhood south of Pelham Parkway near Williamsbridge Road. It's not a cheap neighborhood but there are rentals available. You can take a bus to "FU"
The eastern edge of the neighborhood near Einstein hospital--there's a decided Jewish presence here--is the nicest part of the neighborhood. |
