BTW, I was referring to the part of this thread that teaneckgirl posted, and the "newcomer" I was referring to was the woman who moved onto the block and was very rude and unfriendly--just in case it was unclear. I didn't mean the real OP. These threads are so long that it does get confusing.

I'm sorry to hear about that. My fiance is Puerto Rican and used to live on 169th Street so I know exactly what you're talking about when you say you're the only white girl around. But, I never got anything like that. I never was made to feel uncomfortable.
Now, he lives in Throggs Neck and I'm moving down there in a few months. I'm no longer the minority which is cool, I guess. I mean... I never had any problems before or anything.

Yeah, I had the "impression" (only a hunch) that sometimes white women have it easier than white men in these areas. My b/f seems to have a bit more trouble than I do, but it's relatively rare too.
Sometimes when I visit my b/f, a few people from the building try to talk to me in Spanish, so maybe I can "pass" because I have dark hair (lol). My b/f however would have a bit more trouble since he looks...um...prettty Caucasian.

Hi everyone, I have a question kind of similar to that of the OP. I am a "white girl" and I work on the grand concourse...I just started the job and like it, but everyday my family tells me that someday I will be jumped and stabbed and they fear for my life...they're really freaking me out! The only time I have to worry is walking from my car to my job (or the train when I take it)...I've had no problems so far but soon I'll work nights and i don't know if it's a different story when it's dark out...I guess my question is, how risky do you think it is for a young white girl to walk a few blocks at night in this area? Advice is appreciated a lot!

It's shady at night, but it is uncommon. You never know though

This message is for you and the OP. Im surprised nobody said this earlier. You are about as safe as you can be on a New York street. Minorities that would be classified as "thugs" physically assault other minorities. Sad, but true. Im not saying the harrassment is cool, but its better than being physically assaulted. They don't mess with white people in most cases. It is easier to get away with stuff with other minorities for two reasons. 1) because minorities have this beautiful slogan "stop snitchin" that we supposedly follow. It is a beautiful unwritten phenomenon that is respected on the streets that no street dudes actually live by when #### hits the fan. 2) They also attack other minorities because the police investigation and media coverage will be totally different on you than another minority. Think about it, guys that make a living robbing people, who are they more likely to rob, the white lady with the 5 carat $20,000 engagement ring or the black dude with a $1000 chain. They don't even look at the white lady.
