Even if there was still a problem with rats in the park, it doesn't extend into the neighborhood. Stay out of the park if you are worried about seeing a random rat (maybe every park in NYC for that matter). I don't go to Tompkins Square Park much, but I do walk and go out around there all the time. In fact, I walk down St. Mark's at least twice a day and have never seen a single rat. Telling someone that if they stay in this neighborhood they are going to be living among rats is a wild exaggeration.

I sincerely hope you are correct. And I'm happy to see in the park they've stopped using those stupid trash bags. Has the rest of the city finally gotten away from trash bags?

I'm heading there for at least a few weeks over the summer. But between what I've read and what I've seen on youtube, I have my fears. We've seen the KFC/Taco Bell videos with rats running wild, we've read about even Giselle walking down a west village street and screaming seeing rats and the parks have been infested with them. Not to mention the subways.

I'll check it out for myself in a few weeks. But, what one sees with a google or youtube search for rats and (pick a NYC location) is pretty scary. Hopefully they are turning it around...

I don't know about that. NYC rats are strong!

Just in case no one else has said it, your obsession in this thread and your other one about flotillas of rats parading around the city is an absurd fantasy. Nothing like that is happening. If you insist on wandering the city staring at subway tracks, you'll see rats. Otherwise, not. It's a non-issue for anyone who actually lives here, as you'll discover when you show up.
