Right! Central air has been around for a long time - we have the technology. Of course some of these Fedders houses are more ugly than others, but the buildings that they tear down, although they may need some renovation, are often so charming.

For people that don't know the Fedders thing is being used to describe a certain type of residential construction that is becoming more popular in the city. People find those buildings ugly and feel they mess up the aesthetics of their neighborhoods that's why they complain about them. They call the buildings "Fedders" or "Fedders Boxes," because they always have the little Fedders ads on them covering the holes where the AC's are supposed to slide in.

They do have a very generic look about them.

True..however, in my community of Mott Haven, these houses are going up on vacant land or abandoned property...so although they are not my cup of tea, and they all essentially look the same, they are a vast improvement for the community on many levels.

That being said, it certainly does not have the same value to the community, or is welcomed as much, by the more established, suburbany communities of Morris Park, Throggs Neck, etc....and I certianly understand why.

True, definitely. There an improvement in a lot of areas, but I can certainly see how some people have a beef with them.

They must be very easy to build because those things go up quick, well the outer shell at least.

Well since there is no crafstmanship, detail, or thought involved with it at all..it is really just building a rectangular box...does not take alot of time for that.

However, in the Fordham area there aren't a ton of these. I see more on the #4 as you head further south. A lot of the housing in Fordham and surrounding north west areas is intact (prewar).

Interesting enough - I want cheap housin though when I move - I'll either be by myself movin or bringin the girlfriend and kid, depends - now I dont have an ipod (bleh...) and my cell phone aint sweet - The only city I'm used to walkin is in Rochester, NY and the way the BX sounds I dont wanna walk anywhere near Fordham/West -- or anywhere late at night. Is that right? Whats the situation late at night, like say I hear Hunts Point is cheap and I know they got a train stop there - how would that be walkin at 3am comin back from manhattan? I plan to work nights actually when I get down there so - gotta be atleast low odds of anything happening when I'm walking

I'm not a LIC expert, but I'm just guessing that late night would be better there.

Did you mention how much you can afford? There's very little truly cheap housing in NYC.
