I plan on coming up to NY (from FL) in a couple weeks and the only person I know is an old friend who currently lives @ 1055 University Ave. I finally got the address out of him after I already booked the ticket. Sneaky bastard.

Plenty of google searches has led me to believe it is in *thee* worst neighborhood possible for a white male like myself. A lot of the articles were dated but I did run into a few recent ones.

Then again there are neighborhoods in good old sunny Orlando that I WOULD be caught DEAD in at 2 AM but would not think twice about walking through during the day.

I'm coming up to stay with him so I can venture off during the day to Manhattan job hunting and be back to his place before 8pm. According to Google Maps I will have to walk 14minutes (.7mi) to Yankee Stadium to catch the "D" into Manhattan.

Looking for honest feedback because I have this pit in my stomach.

Also, can cabbies refuse fares? legally?

*Update albeit an hour later* I canceled my Jetblue flight. pit gone.

At least you canceled for now. That area is a typical Bronx hood. The only benefit is that your drug dealer lives right next door.

Just tossing it out there, but to save yourself the trouble of getting to the subway, you could take the Bx13 bus instead of walking the full distance. Like everybody else said, it's not a good area.

Highbridge anytime of the year is candela(hot) but summer is just starting. I would say stay till you land a job, just hold your head up and don't flash anything fancy like an iphone or expensive watch. The normal Bronx "dont **** with me" attitude will grow on you quick and you would soon walk around mean mugging till the point nobody messes with ya.

candela is a term we use to mean "hot" not weather type hot like caliente would imply but rather the streets are hot type of thing...
