I ride the subways and see rats SOMETIMES. You act like they are swarming all over our feet like some third world country. There are rats. They are there because people are messy human beings. People including tourists dump their garbage around as well. Plus the MTA loves to take our money and do nothing to improve the stations. They could easily find ways to get the garbage out. Get some criminals from Rikers to come late night and scrub the stations clean. Everyone wins.

That about sums it up.

I don't need to 'know' anything about NYC to be able to walk the streets, see an insane number of trash bags and then conclude that that is not ideal. And when I'm aware that other cities deal with the trash issue differently, yet NYC still does as it does, I conclude that people aren't doing what they can do.
First thing that needs to happen is a city ordinance needs to be in place requiring the use of trash bins like those used in San Francisco rather than dumping bags into the street. And I'm aware that's a political issue and businesses will fight it as buying said bins is an additional expense. So, consider this something of a preemptive argument against the local businesses who would fight such an ordinance.
Second step is to have more frequent and/or efficient trash collection procedures. And/or change the time of day trash is collected. What I observed yesterday was businesses dumping thier bags out onto the streets at 5 or 6pm around closing time. Walking back through those streets at 2am the bags are obviously still there. You're talking about sidewalks literally being crowded (littered) with trash bags for a good 12 hours at a minimum. (What it looks like before 5 pm I don't know as that is when I got into town. But, I'll head out to lunch shortly.) Forgetting for a moment the odors and rodent problems associated with this, the appearance alone is a significant blight on the city. And, moreso than anything else you want to talk about, this issue seems to be one that can be corrected relatively easily...IF people are moved to action beyond bashing somebody on a message board.

Prior to yesterday, I would have assumed that was an anomaly even in NYC. Now, nah, it's probably a regular sight here.

Uh, like, uh, they are: Woman forced to drop pants on New York subway after giant RAT runs up her trouser leg | Mail Online
And the last underlined part is my point exactly. That it could be handled relatively easily and is not is why this thread exists.

It's your attitude. If you want to complain about the city, say your are making fun of it, and that we need to correct it, expect to be destroyed. That just comes off cocky and arrogant. Either way, get over it.

Only arrogance is in knowing this particular issue-which is reminiscent of third world countries-has been handled better in other places and I want NYC to follow suit.
There's nothing anybody has said in this thread that 'destroys' my argument. Not close. Sure, you can fire away with insults and the like. That's what most people do when their actual argument is zilch.

Skyway31 just doesn't quit...amazing. If this is your personal quest, please run for Mayor in 2013. You will demonstrate yourself as a moron, be completely embarrassed and "made fun of". At which time you will start a new thread called " NYC is the worst ever and totally unfair".
But it will certainly be entertaining. Can't wait! Her motto "Skyway31 knows best". Her experience: Spending 3 months on city-data reading about NYC. She has also traveled to California too. Currently Skyway31 is busy ridiculing Camden on city-data for having so many poor people around. Her most recent accomplishment is harassing Philadelphia residents about their poor public transportation. Since that time, there have been 2 more threads about the topic on Philadephia city-data! Mission accomplished! And she can bring those same results to NYC too!
Vote Skyway31 in 2013!
