Hello everyone. I am moving to New York on Thanksgiving Day to work at the Bronx Zoo. Three different New Yorkers have all told me to avoid living in the Bronx and look somewhere in Manhattan, like Inwood, Washington Heights or even possibly in Astoria in Queens. My monthly rent budget can be no more than $1000 but would be more comfortable in the $800-$900 range. I would prefer to find a 1BR for myself but realize that may prove difficult and might need to find something shared. Is Craigslist my best bet or has anyone found another, better rental site? Is there perhaps another neighborhood or two others can recommend? I won't have a car, so a long commute using public transportation is kinda something I'd like to avoid. Thanks everyone. I'm just looking for people's opinions.
You would actually be able to afford a safer neighborhood in The Bronx than Manhattan. For a share, you may find something in Inwood/Washington Heights, and it really depends upon the location within the neighborhood, as some blocks are better than others. If you work in The Bronx, why pay the Manhattan premium for less space and likely a less-than-stellar apartment compared to what you could find closer to work? Pelham Parkway comes to mind as being a Bronx area that you may check because it is very close to the zoo, but for $1k and under, you'd have to look for a studio.

Another option might be Flushing in Queens which does have a bus that goes to the Bronx Zoo.
