Default Progress Being Made By The Council...

as it turns out, all they need to do is override the mayor's veto on bills that would support middle/low class New Yorkers. All of these bills passed show a step in the right direction in placing the importance of people and maintaining accessibility for those not in financial power over development. In true Bloomberg fashion, he threatens to sue...this dude needs to be long gone.

I agree, he has overstayed his welcome.
He should sail off to the Caymans where he can run elbows with fellow billionaires who aleady make more even than the $10/hour that he begrudges to those working for taxpayer-subsidized developers.

In general I agree that the Mayor has overstayed his welcome, which is the point of the 2 term limit. That being said I am still glad we did not get stuck with Bill "Vote for me at least I am not Bloomberg" Thompson. The City Council has always had this power, however they did not feel compelled to use it for whatever reason.

What I don't like is saying "Well these people need higher wages, nobody can live on that minimum wage, they deserve more IF there is taxpayer subsidized development." What about every other worker? They don't deserve it? They live just fine on it? Either raise it for everyone or not...picking and choosing based on arbitrary policies and which way the wind blows is just lousy politics. Remember, almost every business in NYC gets some kind of tax break, subsidy, credit from government, so they can easily use this justification on any and every business...but they don't...they are just picking and choosing which is what I have a problem with.

Everyone DOES need but it seems churlish to use this as an excuse so that NOBODY can get it.
Better some getting a living wage than none.

There is a certain COSMIC vulgarity about the richest man in new York vetoing a $400 a week wage for ANYONE.

I call this the "Dorothy Phenomenon." You know--Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz. She wanted to go home all through the movie, then at the end, the Good Witch laughs and tells her that she had the ruby slippers; she had the power to go home all along and didn't know it.

Better late than never; the City Council has finally understood that it doesn't have to let our carpetbagger of a Mayor push it around any more.

Kefir...your default answer is NOBODY.....but I say EVERYBODY should get it..and not just the blessed few who fit a very small criteria. You cannot be "for the workers" and "raising wages for workers" when your policy keeps wages at poverty levels for 99% while raising wages very modestly for less than 1%. That is hypocricy and political slight of hand at its best (or worst rather).

We should be cheering that less than 1% of the minimum wage workers get a couple bucks more, while the 99% of minimum wage workers get stuck? And politicians are getting credit for this? Really? That is not an achievement, that is nothing to celebrate, it is creating more bickering/divisiveness than it is worth, and it allows politicians to continue to skate by doing nothing about the plight of people in this city.

Either give it to everyone or don't waste time with this.
