You'll still swelter up here in the summer. Just ask anyone on a hot subway platform...

Pros:

Concerts, jazz clubs, museums, shows, street entertainers, parks, stores, - the whole city vibe.

Always something to do - never a needless dull moment.

And my daughter has an apartment in NYC so we're able to visit with her.

Cons:

Too much pollution - the air isn't fresh at all. Feels like I'll get lung cancer every time I'm in NYC.

Too crowded -

Hate the subways and the awful ear piercing noise -

The city is not for me. Only good for a short visit.

Believe me, your "sweltering" is my nice, cool day.

There's a part of me that has always wanted to live in NYC and a part of me that feels I would soon get over it. I am obsessed with human settlement and the concept of where people are and why they live where they live. I don't know why, but I find the hustle and bustle created by so many people, half of whom are there just to show others how they can hustle, to be somewhat comical, the city's importance notwithstanding. When I need to go somewhere I hop in my car next to my house and go, in a city with roads designed to accommodate a lot more traffic than is here. I suspect the novelty of the subway would wear off quickly for me. I live on .29 acres in a 960 square-foot house with a mortgage that's a fraction of what I would pay for a tiny studio in NYC. I'm two miles downtown, two miles from Trader Joe's, and three miles from Whole Foods. My dog has a big backyard to play in. It's very peaceful. I'm good.

I reserve the right to change my mind.

All this said, from what I'm reading and seeing on the news I am sad to say that while NYC might still be sort of the be all and end all of true mega cities in the U.S., the U.S. is no longer the be all and end all of the world as far as opportunity, growth, energy and quality of life are concerned.

This has to be a joke. Guess the joke is on me, though, because I wasted my time voting in the poll and typing a reply.

Love visiting there. Amazing, beautiful city. Live there? Too crowded. Not an urban living kind of person.

I can't believe over a quarter of people actually said "yes" to this. NYC narcissism at its finest.

Most people equate NYC with Manhattan, not realising that most of NYC is the boroughs. And the boroughs have pleasant, uncrowded, almost suburban neighborhoods, but with easy access to the happening areas in Manhattan. The best of both worlds.
