Exclamation Population Trends in New York City

Fact:
As gentrification creeps upwards in Manhattan, many residents of Harlem and Washington Heights are moving north and east to the Bronx. Many of the displaced are Black-Americans, Dominicans, and Africans. The Bronx is indeed a haven for the poor. It is by far the most affordable borough in the city.

Opinions?
I believe within the next decade, most of the Bronx will be hit with waves of poverty, gangs, and overpopulation. However, it will sustain: I don't believe another 80's crack-epidemic is in its future. But, government will have to figure a way to better this situation or the future of the Bronx looks grim. Current trends indicate a change in populations moving east from Washington Heights, north from Harlem, and south from Wakefield. It looks like the only neighborhoods that may survive this wave will be Riverdale, Pelham Bay, City Island, Throggs Neck, and possibly Woodlawn. Though Pelham Bay and Woodlawn are at risk. The neighborhood of Morris Park is slowly, but surely declining as well. We may see another "white-flight" within the next couple of years.

This is the most ridiculous and clearly racist thread I've seen on this site.
Newsflash: The Bronx is overwhelmingly minority already. In Bedford Park the former Irish immigrants (whites) are already gone. The white population is immigrant Albanian or newcomers like us. The sky didn't fall, crime is down and it's a pretty good place to live. Please focus on issues rather than color--like crime, quality of life... OK Morris Park and Woodlawn may not escape the "waves" of "those" people. Pack your bags now. (I hear they're already using the banks in Woodlawn.)

IMO the areas of the Bronx that are going to be most affected by gentifrication will be the West Bronx neighborhoods. These include Highbridge, Morris Heights, and University Heights. These are all in close proximity to Manhattan, and each has a bridge that connects them. University Heights is already overwhelmingly Dominican, but Morris Heights which had a higher black population is starting to become Dominican aswell. My opinion is that these areas will become the new Washington Heights. As time passes by the migration will reach the central Bronx and the south Bronx. I do believe that the Bronx is headed in a bad direction. The amount of poor people moving into these areas will increase poverty rate, which results in more drugs to make ends meet for some, kids joining gangs to fit in, violence etc etc......it wont be as bad as the 1980's but I already see my block changing for the worst.

The only thing Woodlawn is at risk of, is the opening of yet another Irish bar. Get a life.

It's harder for the very poor to afford to live anywhere in the city, unless they have a spot in public housing or an existing section 8 apartment. Many are being pushed out of the Bronx all together. Section 8 rental caps are lower than the market rents, so with such a tight rental market, it doesn't make sense for landlords to rent to these tenants under most circumstances - that is unless the building is in such a poor condition that no one else would want to live there.

I'm not so sure that BXGEAR intended for this thread to be racist. I, too, find it interesting that I'll live to see the day when Manhattan will be a borough exclusively for the upper-middle-class and upper-class while the poor are shunned and forced northwards into The Bronx. I don't view crime as a matter of color, but I do view it as a matter of socioeconomic class. You can't seriously tell me that upper-middle-class and upper-class people are more apt to commit muggings than lower-middle-class and lower-class people who are struggling to survive. That's just foolish. If you all want to infer that BXGEAR was likewise tossing race into the mix, then I feel sorry for you. I don't make negative distinctions based upon skin color, ethnicity, religious beliefs, sexual orientations, etc., and neither should anyone else. Statistically though I'll stand by my comments that the poor are more likely to commit violent crimes than the rich.

You could all move to Scranton, PA. Our mayor is trying to turn us into a cheaper version of Tribeca or SoHo. I'd be happy to have more New Yorkers as neighbors; you'd only be two hours away from NYC too!
