Who the FU*K ice skates in the Bronx? I don't like the idea. Raze the site. They're gonna mess around and turn it into a refuge for the homeless.
The site is land marked so it cannot be torn down. But the Bronx has Yankee stadium. That's not there for Brinx locals. Neither or the zoo or botanical garden. Come to think of it Kingsbridge is close to Riverdale and it isn't a poor part of the Bronx. Some locals may go.

It's supposed to be a pretty ambitious ice sports facility like Olympic type facility. Honestly don't really think it's intended just for locals. They are targeting broader nyc-metro area. I would have preferred some mix use of the facility but at least it's something unique and not another shopping center which that area didn't really need at all and would have actually hurt a lot of the mom and pop's on kingsbridge.
The Bronx also has several tennis facilities too - likely doesn't fit into the narrow view (prejudice) of Bronxites that some people may have. Plus, lots of people cross borough lines to take full advantage of the city - imagine! You don't even need a passport to cross those borders!
Kings bridge Avenue corridor does not have the income level support the amenities that neighborhoods like Chelsea have.
Right...and there's tons of support for hockey, figure skating, curling, and related ice sports in the Kingsbridge area.
FFS if we must sustain the ludicrous concept that the youths of the mid bronx are in need of ice-sports, then plan a facility with one or two rinks and devote the rest of the space to something useful to the Bronx. I'd like a Montreal style market, but anything would be better than this ice concept. Better 10 bowling lanes, or a rifle range, or an elite clown academy.
So it says that in Oct. 2014 plans solidified to turn the Armory into a big skating rink/Sports/Entertainment center.
Do people in the area skate? It doesn't matter people from all over come to the Bronx for the Bronx Zoo, New York Botantical Garden, and Yankee Stadium.
Basically the idea is to put more amenities in the Bronx to make it more livable for people with more money.
Wow that is massive. But you cant compare with Yankee Stadium, Bronx Zoo and Gardens unless you plan on a pro team playing in whatever you want to put there.
You can do an ice rink because there are some high school hockey teams like Fordham and Cardinal Hayes, and there are kids that can learn to play in the area or learn figure skating.
But my max is 2 rinks. 9 rinks is too much. You can turn one half into something like Chelsea Piers and the other half into affordable housing.
You can put a swimming pool (this should be a big one), basket ball courts, gymnastics, boxing, etc. Just don't devote the whole thing to hockey.

There is a big tennis facility by the Home depot nearby yankee Stadium. Don't know how well it is doing though.
Having just driven through and seen the place, it really is not a good location to attract patrons from far away. It looks close to the Major Deegan, but you have to get off the ramp at 230th St and drive through quite a few stop lights and very congested and narrow streets. There is Jerome Ave, but the subway is right over it, making single lane either way. That is bad because lots of people make turns. That will cause all the cars to pile up.
It is a very residential with local stores on the ground floor. It is not a major commercial spot. The traffic is very bad. I am referring to the Armory they want to turn into 9 ice rinks. Kingsbridge is not an ideal place to put it.
The best thing they can do is break up half the lot into smaller plots, and sell to small landlords. They can build ground floor commercial, and residential up top however many flights is allowed. The other half can be some kind of community center with a swimming pool. Or give it Fordham or Lehman college.
