Yes Pelham Bay is safe, best areas are further from the El. As for up and coming areas of the bronx.....
Its pretty working class to poor except for riverdale. Theres a bunch of art gallerys on city island, but the whole burrough is more isolated from the parts of manhattan that have the majority of high paying jobs (midtown and south), for it to attract to the class of people that "gentrify" a neighborhood. Who knows maybe hipsters will start moving to belmont, buildings aren't that different from the village? Probably not but anythings possible. Who would've thought LIC would be hot today?

Took a walk recently to little Italy and saw that they've constructed a whole slew of new apts catering to Fordham students.
I dunno...the Bronx has so many subway stations, bus stops, express bus stops, and expressways that it doesn't seem at all inaccessible to the city, esp the south bronx which is just a few stops from Manhattan. Brucker Blvd is also right near Manhattan (I like to call it Bran-Hattan).
I'm starting to see a sprinking of younger folks in the Fordham/Kingsbridge area. As I mentioned in another thread, some of the apts on the Concourse are going coop, and they are gorgeous prewar gems. A broker I spoke to who does tours of these coops said that once people discover the area, they are pleasantly surprised at the size, quality, and low price of coop units (and these are increasing; plenty of coops in this borough).
In fact, the low prices make it ideal for young people or young couples as starter homes.
City Island is very nice...loads of seafood restaurants and a small town feel (the island is tiny but very charming).

I'm liking how Belmont is making housing for Fordham University students. It would blend in very nicely with the shops of Little Italy. I just hope that these students do not cause any problems with the longtime residents.

Elvira I like your posts and what you said about diversity, however a previous poster laid out the demographics by Congressional District and it seemed like in much of the Bronx its only 3-7% white. That's not too diverse. In my county of 25,000 in Texas there are only 4-5 Jews, but believe it or not almost no one talks about ethnicity or religion. No one seemed to care I was Jewish when I got elected to a few things.

Thanks Ocean:
Yes, the demographics of the Bronx have changed drastically over the decades, but that's true of NYC in general...there are some areas that have more whites (Riverdale, et al) but yes, I almost glow in the dark here (lol). Fordham University students are predominantly white from what I saw when I visited the campus.
But it is diverse in terms of how many different ethic groups are represented...African, Asian, Jamaican and other Caribbean, African American, various and sundry Latinos, and so on. Haven't seen many Japanese though (lol)...
