I'm originally from brooklyn, ny and I consider a typical New Yorker as
someone who is:
1) Very direct: would tell you whether they can do something or not.
Will never flake at the last minute.
2) Loves Sopranos
3) Very close to their family
4) Dresses pretty well most of time (at least when going out)
5) Has a NY accent (duh)
6) Knows when a person is flaking or lying and will let the person know.
7) For guys: been in a fight or two
8) Loves pizza
9) Confrontational
10) NOT passive-aggressive
feel free to add to this list.
I would say a guy like 'Christopher' in Sopranos is someone who is a very typical New Yorker (one doesn't have to be in mob).

I'm not big on the Sopranos. Saw an episode from 2006 and figured that it was too late to start following and so I never bothered.
A typical New Yorker doesn't care about what everyone else thinks about them. They are surrounded by so many different people, all the time. A newcomer or out-of-city person are the ones who are anal about how they look. They need to look perfect, all the time. A typical New Yorker is attracted to the color black. The typical New Yorker has a dark side. A mellow side. Also an artsy side.
I don't think a typical New Yorker can be defined. They can be of any ethnicity, any lifestyle, and of any economic background.
