I am a CA. Special Ed. teacher wishing to move to New York and teach there. Will I have to take tests..etc. in order to
qualify to be a teacher? Can you direct me to the appropriate depts? I am not bilingual. Thank you.
Does anyone know what the current job market looks like for NYC teachers – namely those that are younger?* Is it extremely difficult to break in as a new teacher given the job environment these days?* Do younger teachers typically get thrown into the “rougher” inner city schools or does my wife have a chance to work in a decent neighborhood?
Thanks to you all!!!
Want a teaching job? You'll need Close Combat experience and weapons training. And how are your First Aid skills? Can you field-dress a stab wound and stem the bleeding whilst fending off a pack of hoodlums ..er...I mean 'students' who are frantically seeking to become acquainted with the intimacies of your gluteus maximus area? Also, you do not mention languages. Will you be able to communicate with students who speak none properly?
Please forward the pertinent information and thank you once again for responding to our ad inSoldier of Fortune!

I'm a NYC public school teacher. You will have to google: NYS Teaching Exams
They're offered every couple of months. They're about $85 each if I remember correctly.
You will have to take 3-4 of them. Then you have to send all of your degrees etc. To the DOE.
Don't know if you are still on the same course, but you or your wife should not be discouraged by any of the "statistics" it's not helpful to look at the raw data without understanding that it is not "drop out" per se that happens in the 3rd and 4th year. In New York, you have to go on and get you Masters in order to receive your liscence---you have 5 years to complete it, and work under a provisional liscense in the interim, many teachers go on to work in other concentrations based on their MA--Speech Pathology, Guidance, Administrations...etc. Teaching is one of the most noble professions, and we all know that no one goes into it for the money, but that said, with after school, and picking up some summer work, there is a lot of flexibility to earn more money. Teachers work hard, the inner city students needs good, young, enthusiastic teachers, and making a difference in a child's life is worth all of it. The achievement gap is startling, but progress (albeit slow) is being made, one great, dedicated, work on the weekend, pay out of their own pocket, teacher at a time....
