East Harlem is definitely the worst out of Manhattan.

No no, up until 96th st on the east side is perfectly safe on nearly all blocks. Even above it for a couple of blocks is becoming somewhat nice. The Upper East side has been expanding over the past couple of decades because of Gentrification. 20 years ago only up to 86th st was considered desireable, but now it is up to 96th st. This won't go on for very much longer though because of the large number of housing projects in East Harlem which can't be changed, developed, or gentrified.
Pretty much the same thing applies to the Upper West Side.
The difference between the Upper East Side and Spanish Harlem is like night and day even though the neighborhoods are only separated by a couple of blocks.

wow. everyone here has been so helpful. thank you. now i have such a better perspective of Manhattan. I used to think the only good neighborhoods were south of central park.
since she's used to LA where you get an actual home, not a box on top of a box, would she enjoy one of the upper areas more? like, do they provide with you greater area for the same price?

that is how it is all over the NYC metro, even in the Jerz
Wayne NJ is next to Paterson, and Englewood Cliffs is next to the wood.
That is something you guys will get use to.

If your mother is used to living in a one-family home, I doubt that anything she can afford in Manhattan would qualify as "greater area". 100K does not get you that far. You can rent a small 1-bedroom apartment, groceries will be more expensive than anywhere else and probably she will not be able to have a car.

100 K is her salary. If she's selling her home, she'll have considerably MORE to work with!

Sure. I didn't see any mention of whether she's selling and how much equity she has, so I didn't consider that.

sorry about that. well our house is worth 1.2 million so we could sell for a little 1 mil. she will most likely divorce my dad so she will have about 400k-450k since they will still owe some on the house.
