But he didn't live on Park Avenue. Bed Stuy wasn't the best neigborhood when he lived there and there will be many occupants of tenament buildings who will tell you that they would gladly live in Marcy or Borinquen Projects over their tenaments. Do you agree?

As far as the chicago projects vs. the NY projects. I don't think people from Chicago would think our Projects are anything to sneeze at. It is all the element of the unknown. You want to know a bad project go to just about any in Baltimore. That is poverty on its highest level.

Hands down, public housing at its worst beats being homeless on the streets on the coldest NY winter nights!!!!! Ask anybody in an overcrowded city shelter waiting to get into their own place!

I live in Edenwald in the Bronx, and I am very thankful for my apartment, when I first applied, I got the usual " you don't want to live there" now those same people wish they had applied too, and when I am leaving for work in the morning, I am not alone, we work hard to support our families, and it's a real community, neighbors really look out for one another, yes we have drugs, as there are in most places, but it is what it is, never felt threatend, robbed, I work for the city, and with all the budget cuts, I am thankful that my rent will be adjusted if any unforseen circumstances should occur, very good heat, electrcity included, 3 bedrooms, formal diningroom(apartment is unusually large, the size of a single story 3 bedroom house) very large living room. an area for a library, 8 walk in closets (unheard of for nycha apts) on the first floor, so we have no contact with the elevator, like i said before, bad things happen everywhere (upper east side, etc) but for under $600.00, I am glad that I made the choices I did, look at Parkchester and co-op, a high priced project with the same problems, for triple the money...

that is way off, there is a large Hasidic Jewish population in the area and many people have to drive by the projects since the Rockaways are so narrow. The projects are dangerous but the roads around them are too busy at times for them to randomly harass passerbys. Not according to race anyway. LOL

I had a share of bad housing projects myself. I do currently live in housing myself. I live in mitchells housing project however my housing project is not located with the other main buildings its located on a residential street across the borinquen houses and other tenenet buildings and it is better runned and managed because its smaller building with 6 floors and elevator rarely breaks down and sometimes elevator is clean. Cant say the same for the main project buildings on the main location of mitchells across willis avenue. I dont live too bad, I have a 4 bedroom apartment with one and a half bathroom with views of both manhattan and the bronx and I have a fire escape. I get a lot of respect in my building everyone knows me no ones messes with me, and respected for not going to jail ever but to going to college doing four years and staying out of trouble. THe sad truth is my building does not look like a housing project. Actually my building is more better then regular tenenment housing that houses lots of immigrants and section 8 renters which are heavly infestied with drugs and broken families. I

Ive been inside many housing projects through out New York City, its so much that I even lost count. For the most part I still can confirm that the melbrooke projects in the mott haven section of bronx along brook ave and 137 street are still bad and rough. I dont recommend no one to walk alongside 137 street of the melbrooke projects and its easily possible to get hit by a stray bullet. Onetime a couple was sitting in thier car and both were shot in the head and left until the morning. My sister knows this girl whos body was dumped behing the mellbrooke projects, sad story. Anotehr bad housing project is Mott Haven Projects which is located along willis aveune and 140 street. Constant fights by the basketball court. Sometimes african american youths will pick on the mexicans who live across the street from the projects. Onetime it got so bad that some mexicans chased a group of black teens back to the projects and of the the kids got hit by a car and died and the sped off. Another bad project is the butler housing projects along park avenue in the bathgate/crotona section of the bronx. I remember passing over the bridge which crosses over the metro north tracks and I stepped in a spots of aged blood. Onetime passing through the butler projects some people wanted to start trouble but because of my size they backed down. Another bad housing project is edenwald, which at one time was the most violent in the city. My sister use to live across the street from edenwald and I use to spend time at her house and sleep over so that I can walk to Truman Highschool in coop city during the dawn of morning. Everytime I walked trough edenwald thier would always be blood on the floor. Thier use to be constant fighting between african americans and jamaicans over the control of the drug trade in that area. Another bad housing project was redhook projects in Brooklyn, I went thier to meet up with some girl from school, never again I was scared Mod cut: language. The best housing project I have visited so far is probably on pelham parkway, or the ones next to saint raymonds cementary or the one behind lincoln center in manhattan and oh yeah the one in astoria queens which is going mitchell lama.
