It was way before my time so I have a hard time imagining els on Sixth Ave & Second Ave. I have seen photos and it is so strange. Also there was a large elevated station at the foot of the Brooklyn Bridge on Center Street.
I vaguely remember the el that was on Third Ave in the Bronx.
I love the photo of the Falafel Cart!

Because I've mentioned, several times, the neighborhood in which I teach -- here's a picture of a house/apartment across the street from my school in the South Bronx. Note the caged-in "front porch," the spike-topped iron fence in front, and the razor wire on the side fence.
The building to the left houses the corner store (which always reeks of bacon), and is directly across the street from the St. Mary's Park housing project.
If anyone is interested, I can call and find out the monthly rental .....

Yeah thats basically one of the easier ways of telling whether you're in a really bad neighborhood or not. If you see those bird-cage porches everywhere watch yourself because you're in the hood.

I had to stop in and take a look at NYC, I've never been there, by the pictures I've just seen, I can say I really don't care to go.. "No offense to anyone" it just isn't my kind of place at all..
Here is a picture of our uptown skyline in Holliday Texas..

^ Yuck! Sorry no offense, but Holliday Texas is a place I will never go. I take any neighborhood in NYC, before I move to that.

No offense taken.. But just out of curiosity what would you NOT like about Holliday Texas?
It's the most peacefull, quite, and Friendly place you could ever imagine on earth. Usual traffic problems are what you see in the photo, "NONE" the crime rate is zero, we don't even have a police department, we don't have any use for one, the county and State handle the trucks that come through here that might be speeding once in a while. we have a post office, a dairy queen restraunt, and a gas station. What more would anyone ever need?

Looks to me that the Dairy Queen is the great social, commercial and cultural hub of your so-called Holliday.
Can't wait to sample the diverse offerings of your cosmopolitan town.

I have pix but I can't figure out how to post them. When I tried all that I got was a link to the pictures, but most people will not click on a link.

I will. Post them. Ask someone to help you if you don't want to post the link.

I've seen one or two pics - horrible ugly things. Looks like they did not want to put the subway underground so they just built an endless rail bridge over some street, and use that as the subway. I've read that this is a huge thing in NY, but, due to the fact that they are so ugly I presume, I cant find many pictures. I dont suppose anyone here could help?

They took a lot of the els down. You can get a picture of the Lexington Ave line #4 as it comes out from underground at 161st St and Yankee Stadium. Thats a good shot. It runs from there to Woodlawn so there are plenty of shots to get. Fordham Rd is one of them near Fordham University. You photogs out there can help this poster out by shooting these.
