I know this sounds like an odd request, but does anyone have pics of the elevated subway?
I've seen one or two pics - horrible ugly things. Looks like they did not want to put the subway underground so they just built an endless rail bridge over some street, and use that as the subway. I've read that this is a huge thing in NY, but, due to the fact that they are so ugly I presume, I cant find many pictures. I dont suppose anyone here could help?

The el preceded the subway by quite a few years. I think they started building els shortly after (or during?) the Civil War. The subway was opened in 1904.
I don't have any photos, but you can probably find some by Googling New York elevated trains. You can also check out ForgottenNew York (I forget whether it's a .com or .org), the Library of Congress (loc.gov), and the New-York Historical Society (NYHistory.org).
I live in a building alongside the former route -- a stop, in fact -- of an old el. I can't imagine living here when it was still in use . But plenty of people did! And still do! The subway goes elevated in parts of Brookyn, Queens, the Bronx and Upper Manhattan.

I Love Nyc (:
and this is why i love my new york (:
the pictures are amazing. seriously, some people may put it down, but in reality i find a griddy charm in the dirty streets, the homeless asking for a bite of my egg mckmuffin on the way to macy's, the .006 mph you can move during the christmas holidays around times square. ahh those tourists (:
some people hate it, some love it. but there really is NO place like new york

You can find pictures online. The reason why the subways are elevated in some areas and undergroud else were is usually done because of geography. Some areas (like Northern Manhattan and the Bronx) are very hilly. It would be just too much money to blast, and dig and cover an undergroud tracks and station. (This is the reason why the 1 is elevated in Harlem along B'way) I don't mind the Els. Some of the best views of Manhattan are along the Els. (The 7 in LIC, Queens and the B,D, N,Q along the Manhattan Bridge)
