Post 2007 Yankees- what's to come?
Ok- I have to come back to my NY'ers on this one. As my username suggests- I live up in MA. I have to take the jeers or Red Sox Nation everyday at work and even on the streets.
Last night was depressing. Torre looked like he had been mugged.
I am a die hard Yankee fan and have been since I was 5 years old- my first trip to Yankee Stadium. All I hear is rumors and allegations.
I wanted to see what is on most peoples minds- Torre is most definitely gone (I assume)? What about A-Rod, and the platoon of veteran core players- Rivera, Posada, Pettitte?
As much as a disappointment this postseason was, I have been very impressed by their young pitchers and new stars in the making.
What are your thoughts NY???!!!
PLEASE- no Yankee bashing- I get enough of that up here in purgatory with the Sox.

The Yankees have a lot of questions to be answered. Let's just say it is going to be a busy off-season. As a fan I hope that they bring Posada, A-Rod, Mo, and Pettite back. I love Torre, and part of me doesn't want to see him go, but a change might not be a bad thing.
On a side note, shouldn't there be a NYC sports section here? I think all the big cities should have a separate sports section.

I know there is a sports section, but every time you post something about the Yanks there is some Yankee hater ranting about their payroll.
I don't like the idea of dismantling the team. 1st base and the outfield should be priorities. A back-up for Posada is urgent unless they decide to keep Molina.
Beyond that, they have all the chips they need.
I would prefer Girardi- they need some fire from the dragon. Torre is the main man and I'll always love him. I think he is tired and probably wants to retire anyway. La Russa would be a BAD move. He is even more subdued than Torre except he has no big market experience.

I was hoping that that the Mets would dump Willie Randolph & the Yanks would be there waiting. I agree that Torre is an outstanding manager but he just looks so tired.
Do you guys think that Mattingly is ready to take the helms? If not would he work well with Girardi? If Girardi would be chosen, he would need to learn to not burn out his young pitching staff as he did in Florida.
For goodness sake, they better resign Posada & Molina should stay, too. The A-Rod situation is up to A-Rod... let's hope he doesn't listen to Scott Boras, all he thinks about is the $$.

I am pulling for Girardi. He played in NY and know what it takes. He also made that unbelievable run of wins with Florida at the end the other year.
I think continue to groom Mattingly- he's not ready just yet.

Do you expect to have a happy, joy- joy forum just because you are NY. Hating is for people on top which you guys obviously are not, but with that being said you guys are really not that far off. I think if you solidify you're pen you will be right back on top. I think the fact that Torre used Jaba and Mariano for 3 innings with a 5 run lead in game 3 was either terrible game management or a sign of a HUGE lack of confidence in the rest of the pen. I thought you guys were grooming Jaba for Mariano's gig, but after bugfest I am sure there is questions about his toughness/focus under pressure. I think you guys have a lot of work to do in the pen. You should resign the vets (Mariano, A rod, Jorge) also. I hated the way it ended for Torre, he seems like a good guy. Steinbrenne did him a real disservice. The funny thing about Torre is he is real defiant in a gentlemen way so I don't think it bothered him really. I was really rooting for you guys because there will be limited joy in beating Cleveland. There is nothing like beating the Yankeees. I hope we meet next year in the ALCS though. I guess we will see.

There is a sports forum on City-data, however you may ask in 'About the Forum' if they would consider making a sport forum for each city.
Technically this belongs in the sports forum, but I will leave it for now.

I agree that Torre looks tired, but after all the success he's had with the Yankees, I would hope they at least give him the dignity he justly deserves if they are going to look for a change. He wouldn't be fired as his contract will expire Nov 1. Although I would like to see him back, if they do look to make a change, the Girardi would probably be the best choice. Mattingly knows he isn't ready and La Russa would be totally wrong for this club.
First base continues to be a bit of a problem as long as Giambi has that untradable contract (thankfully it's on it's last year) and the back ups we bought in, from the Travis Lees to the Tony Clarks to the Andy Philips haven't exactly worked. I don't see first base getting straightened until Giambi is off the books.
Outfield is a small problem. Mielky can be the centerfielder for the next ten years. I'm concerned about Damon and Matsui breaking down. Both have large contracts and it seems we are stuck with them.
The pitching looks promising. If Pettitte comes back, our rotation looks to be Wang, Pettitte, Hughes, Chamberlian with Mussina and Kennedy battling for the 5 spot. The bullpen needs work (can we please get Farnsworth outta here already?). With Chamberlian going back to the rotation, we will need to find another bridge to Mo if we can (we must) resign him.
