Couple relocating from London to New York - where to start?? (apartments, how much)

My husband and I are planning to move from London to NYC in 12 months time and we have been looking at apartments and are wondering which areas out of Manhatten to move to? We know Manhatten very well but not the outer regions and would like to know where is nice to live that is not far from the city by train and has a bit of space?
