I hope the MTA doesn't get wind of this article because they'll look up what the average cost of a car is in NYC and raise the price of the Metrocard to about $5 below it.

I just got the various fare hike proposals.
Yep, they read this post and set prices at $5 less than car ownership.

Sorry I just don't buy this survey at all. See page 10.

The average housing cost in NYC is $1338. Less than DC, boston, SF, San Diego and LA. The average housing price in Chicago is almost as high at $1204. I just don't buy that housing in NYC is anywhere near that.

Lets not for get that this is a metro area comparison so there is a lot of suburbs to include. US Census department cost of living numbers have NYC no where near that.

The first four pages of this thread have seemed to indicate that maybe its not impossible because no car is needed in NYC. That is reflected by a slightly lower cost of transportation in NYC. But its an average of about $150 less. A closer look of the survey indicates that NYC housing costs are less than 6 markets and only slightly higher than the rest of the country. I just don't see anyway that is remotely true. If it is true the only legitimate explanation is that New Yorkers are living in much smaller places.

Perhaps you can get by in NYC with the same money, but certainly I would not see that NYC cost of living is remotely close to the rest of the country. You have to adjust your standard of living.

hindu,

Part of the probem is that we keep being force-fed the real estate hype of the average apartments costing 3, 4 and $5,000 per month.
Media prints this claptrap because they crave the advertising.

New York Cit can be had at not too much of a premium over Assville, AK. And it offers a LOT more perks.

What we give up are sprawling lawns and extra bedrooms.

I suspect more people are living with (unrelated) roommates in New York than many of those other places.

When you look at individual expenses side by side NYC vs everywhere else then NY is the most expensive. But when you factor in the cost of car payments, gas, insurance, auto maintenance, mortgage, home owners insurance, home maintenance, and taxes it can be cheaper here. Most people don't look that deep into it they see the initial cost of the apt compared to the single family suburban home and the cost of diff goods and say it's more expensive in the city than other places. Or people compare the cost of a similar apt in another city or the suburbs to how expensive it is here without applying those other things that won't be a factor here. All those things considered it should be at least close to other cities or decent suburbs around here.

If you live above your means or try to live a more "traditional" American lifestyle here then it is a lot more expensive. But if you have a decent job, live the NY lifestyle, and not above your means you'll be fine.
