I found a new market in East Harlem.
It is called ALDI and it is adjacent to the TARGET on the second floor of the East River Mall (117th and East River.) It has been open 10 days now.
It is TERRIFIC with the best overall prices I have found in New York City.
It is a big glitzy clean place with easy to reead prices on everything,
A couple examples:
Whole Milk $2.89/ gal.
Half and Half both reular and fat free...$ 1.49/quart
White Bread: $.85/20 ounce loaf
Whole Berry cranberry sauce $.89
Large eggs $.99/doz.
Pure maple syrup: $3.99/8 ounces
Pineapple chunks and crushed $.89/1lb can
Sweet potatoes: $ .99/3 pounds
1/2 pound blocks of cheddar: $1.49
and snack food galore.
Their frozen pies looked terrific but we got weighed down and had to think of hauling the cart onto the M15 downtown.
We dropped $60 and had to dig in our pockets because NO CREDIT CARDS...cash and debit only.
Give it a try if it;s not too far out of the way for you.
We had intended to go to Costco but after ALDO there was no need...all we skipped was the delicious pickled herring at Costco.
We have decided too let our Costco lapse next February.
They are related somehow to Trader Joes -- I think the same German owner or something. There is one here in Queens (Rego Park) but I have only been once.
There is an ALDI store in Rego Center II which has been open for perhaps 2 years already. (Aldi's is a well-known German supermarket chain.) They have best and lowest prices of any of the supermarkets in the area. When shopping at Aldi, people need to be aware of the fact that one needs to bring their own shopping bags (as they don't give free bags and if you need bags they charge you per bag) and they only accept cash or debit cards (credit cards are not accepted). Otherwise it is a great store!
BTW, it is better than Costco as one doesn't need a membership and one can buy things in small amounts (whereas in Costco most items are sold in bulk).

That's good to know, thank you!
I also noticed the Aldi store when I went to target this past weekend but I didn't go in. I'm glad to read that they have decent prices.
One of the Albrechts bought Trader Joe's through a family trust. ALDI was their family market from Germany, but it split into two operating groups, with one of them purchasing Trader Joe's. TJs operates separately from ALDI, however, though I have heard that ALDI has some good things like coffee and dark chocolate, etc., but is focused more on basic value than a boutique market.

They had only one coffee choice, called Beaumont Classic Roast and we bought a small can. We'll try it tomorrow straight and if it's good we'll replace the Kirkland Columbian from Costco in the blend that we make.
I went to the Queens location today in honor of Kefir King.
