I encountered this really interesting map of crime in NYC. It doesn't specify the year, but it seems to be new. You pick the borough and they have broken up the borough by what looks to be census tracts. They name it by a street intersection in the area or in some cases just the neighborhood name. Here's what you do: highlight an area, and click on it. If you chose crime (they also have property values, schools etc) it gives you a crime rating. The number is out of 100, 100 being the safest. On the map, the darker the shade the safer, vice versa, the lighter the shade the more dangerous. Since I am a Bronxite, I checked out the Bronx. And I find the map to be pretty accurate.

Here are some ratings.

University Heights (area from 181st to Fordham, Sedgwick to University) :21 out of 100.

Dr MLK Jr / Fordham rd (area from 183rd to Fordham, Aqueduct to Davidson) 21 out of 100.

Andrews ave /179th : 24 out of 100

Grand ave / 190th: 21 out of 100

Grand Concourse / Kingsbridge (includes E 194th street) : 13 out of 100

Briggs Ave /197th : 22 out of 100

Webster ave / 184th : 13 out of 100

Park ave / 183rd : 16 out of 100

Morris ave/ Burnside ave : 20 out of 100

Davidson ave /Tremont ave : 11 out of 100

Jerome ave / 172nd : 23 out of 100

Sheridan ave / 169th : 14 out of 100

Walton ave / 164th : 20 out of 100

Melrose : 24 out of 100

Brook ave / Bergen ave : 30 out of 100

145th / 3rd ave : 47 out of 100

Mott Haven : 27 out of 100

149th / Morris ave : 15 out of 100

Prospect ave / Southern BLVD : 34 out of 100

Southern BLVD / 147th st : 50 out of 100

139th/ Cypress ave : 15 out of 100

Tinton/ Westchester ave (where Guy lives hehe ): 8 out of 100

Bruckner / 156th : 47 out of 100

Hunts Point ave / Coster ave : 8 out of 100

Bruckner BLVD / Tiffany street : 23 out of 100

Metclaf /Story ave : 19 out of 100

Ward ave / Watson ave : 20 out of 100

Manor ave / 172nd : 12 out of 100

222nd / Barnes ave: 9 out of 100

The safest areas are :

Broadway/ Van Cortland : 80 out of 100

Palisade ave / 246th st : 80 out of 100

Mickle ave / Allerton: 80 out of 100

I welcome people from other boroughs to the same. Post any interesting findings. Post your area aswell. My area got a 21 out of 100. Here, see for yourself:

Overall, Queens has the best score - 53. Brooklyn and Queens got 33 and the Bronx 24. Meanwhile, Buffalo got a 6, Schenectedy got 11 and Rochester 4!

I'd LOVE to see their actual data. I'm sorry- but my very upscale suburb (51) in upstate NY is NOT less safe than Queens (53.) And Syracuse (12) isn't twice as UNSAFE as the flipping Bronx (24). That isn't right. It just isn't.

Skaneateles, NY is listed at a 20, which implies that the Bronx is SAFER. Ridiculous. Skaneateles is, by FAR, the wealthiest and most affluent village/town in the entire region. Low crime, excellent public education, extremely high incomes, and planted on the northern tip of a very clean, beautiful lake. It's where PRESIDENTS have visited to unwind. It is NOT worse than the Bronx. Good grief.

Yes Supermario, it kind of reflects my perception of that Fordham area of the Bronx, however this is only statistics. The higher the crime rate the lower the property value. I think it is a good map to decide where you would buy property. Then again about 4 out of thousand get mugged in the Bronx, which is still a lot better than it was in the 70's-90's. Therefore it should still be quite safe to walk around in the Bronx Fordham area.

If your a Banger, dealer, or hang out on the streets a lot it's pretty freaking dangerous though. It's also pretty dangerous to drive around there, people drive like maniacs and a lot of pedestrians dive into the streets out of nowhere.

I wonder how they get their data. I disagree with their rating for the Harrison & W Burnside area. It received a 31 out of 100, and that area looks way worse. It should be in the 20's. I also noticed areas with alot of private homes received higher scores. People should put up their rating, and then tell us if they feel it's indicative of their neighborhood. That way we can check out the validity fo the map.

I would imagine that in the 90's the Bronx statistics would have been much lower.
