Hello, everyone. Here are the particulars: Family of 8, six kids, relocated from Florida to Jersey last year. Kids (ages 5 to 19) are dying to go to New York city, just to see it and say that they have been. They want that New York, skyscraper big city vibe. They don't have a lot of money to spend and kids say they understand they just want to go and walk around and see the city. They won't be staying overnight. I haven't been to New York since the early 90's, before I was married, but I do remember there were little kids in our party and that they were thrilled.
Could anyone suggest what area to just go to, park and walk around to get that New York city vibe? Maybe eat a good old New York City vendor hot dog and visit a cheap attraction (how much is the Empire State Building these days? What about 9/11 area, is it finished and is there a cost for it?) I know we went to Central Park the last time we were there, and I know these kids they would just get a kick out of people watching. Is that a good plan? Would they get the vibe there? They are going tomorrow so any suggestions would be so GREATLY appreciated.
I suggest that you go to Central Park for people watching if the weather is good. An affordable attraction would be to take all to the American Museum of Natural History which has a suggested contribution (pay what you wish/can afford) rather than a fixed entrance admission. This museum is across from Central Park on its west side. So those two definitely would work together and not be expensive for a large family on a small budget.
For something a bit more costly I would recommend the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum.
The Empire State Building is quite costly per person. I think it is at least $25 per adult.
Take the GPS with you. Many roads are closed in the city, to be sure. Use the GPS. Or print Google maps.
After you check the Central park, go to Times Squar to eat. Kids will love the Times Square area. Also you can take your kids to biggest toy store. No need to buy anything. Just to play, make sure they are wearing socks :-)
Top of the Rock [ rockefeller center] take a strool up 5th ave after towards central park about 9 city blocks grab a central park bench near the entrance and a few hot dogs and sodas and just take a rest and people watch. and than take a stroll through the park if you still have time. and head over to pj Clarks for the best burgers in town . here are some links \ or you can to the hop on hop off bus tour Top of The Rock
And I would do the first NYC trip far differently. You see, to me, the Statue of Liberty is one of the most important sites and a great way to "get the vibe". So, drive to Staten Island, park near the ferry terminal. Take the free ferry past the Statue, past Governor's Island and arrive at South Ferry. From there, a subway will take you uptown or a short walk to South Street Seaport.
